Dear Parents/Guardians of Rising First and Second Grade Students,
As many of you may know, we have had a first/second grade multiage classroom in past years at Franconia. This classroom provides an opportunity to off-set high class sizes in both first and second grade, while also providing a special educational experience for these students.
At this time, we plan to have one multiage classroom for the 2019-2020 school year. In this environment, teachers combine Fairfax County and Virginia Commonwealth curricula with the presentation of concepts at an individual students’ level of readiness. This allows the children to be instructed at their appropriate developmental levels. We feel the program has been both exciting and successful.
Students are considered for placement in this class based on teacher recommendation, as permitted by available space. If you wish for your student to be considered for enrollment in the multiage pilot program for 2019-2020, please complete the multiage interest form (works best in Chrome). If we have a large number of student requests, we will use a lottery system. Please consider that if your child is a rising first grade student, and participates in the multiage classroom, they will remain in the multiage classroom for their 2nd grade year. We reserve the right to balance all classes with regard to grade, gender, ethnicity, data and our professional knowledge of students.
Decisions regarding whether or not we can offer a multiage program in 2019-2020 and in future years, are determined by enrollment numbers, staffing, and data. All classroom placements will be communicated to parents in August at Open House, following the customary schedule.
Thank you for your interest in the multiage program at Franconia Elementary School!
If you have questions, please feel free to call me at (703) 822-2200. Additional information can also be found on our school's website.
Sincerely,
