Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Dedication, and Excellence

From the Principal

Family,

Well this is the last one for the school year.  I have to say that it has been fun sharing the year with all of you, and I am looking forward to the first edition to begin the year in August. But let’s wrap up here and then we can take time to relax and kick back a little here and there before we get back to the grind.

This past week was bitter sweet.  Knowing that our students are anxious to get to summer and that teachers are running on fumes as well, it is good to let them go.  But to see them walk away on those last days is a little tough.  I will miss the students because they will go away, and come back a little older and more mature.  Now if you are at home with them, then they don’t seem to grow at all (at least that has been my experience with my kids).  The fridge however, seems to get smaller!  I will miss the teachers as well because of all the great stuff I get called on to come and see during the year.  Not only do I get to see our students and staff at work, I get my steps in too.  I have to get a handle on this figure you know.

What about those awesome LADY STALLIONS of the softball diamond and their state championship?!!!  I can’t say how impressed I am with these young ladies.  And to be starting 3 freshmen and a couple of sophomores says that we are young and have so much to look forward too!  But let’s not forget the juniors and seniors who let the tone for the team and who have been committed for a number of years.  Congratulations also goes out to the families who were able to ride out the nail biting and the great defense of that 17 inning marathon.  And finally, let’s give Coach Gary Dillow his due for his leadership of these young ladies.  We know that behind every ground ball fielded, pitch hit, run scored, and celebration has been a leader who has encouraged these young ladies every step of the way!

Before I go, I want to reiterate that as happy as our students are to be out of school and to have their free time, they are without that structure that many of them long for.  Touch base with them often, and talk about their days and evenings.  Share with them your days and evenings.  Give them a hug every now and then, and let them know that they are loved and valued.  If nothing else, make them look at you crazy for doing it!  But seriously, make sure they know you are listening to them.  They need it, as much as each of us do.

So I am signing off, and again, wanting to thank you for allowing me into your world each week.  Thank your for the continued support of all things South County.  I am looking forward to working with those of you who will be back, and hearing about the next steps in the journeys of our graduating parents.  Have an awesome summer, and please take care of yourselves.  #OneStallion

VMEA Blue Ribbon Award

This past March, all of South County’s performing music ensembles (the South County Symphonic Band, the South County Singers, and the South County Chamber Orchestra), received superior ratings at their respective state assessments.  This a first for South County High School, and this past week, they officially received the Virginia Music Educator’s Association Blue Ribbon award in recognition of this accomplishment.  This is the highest award given to schools music programs in the Commonwealth of Virginia. If you know a student or faculty member of the South County Music Department, please congratulate them!

Heads Up: 2019-20 School Year Calendar Changes; Notable Dates

New Virginia legislation requires that schools opening prior to Labor Day must be closed the Friday immediately preceding Labor Day. As a result, FCPS’ 2019-20 Standard School Year Calendar has changed and Friday, August 30, is now a holiday for students. In addition, the Board voted to move the March school planning day to Tuesday, March 3, 2020, to accommodate the 2020 presidential primary.

Other notable dates include the first day of school, August 26; Thanksgiving break, November 27-29; Winter break, December 23, 2019-January 3, 2020; Spring Break, April 6-10, 2020; and the last day of school, June 12, 2020. See the 2019-20 school year calendar
