CONGRATULATIONS!!!

SCHS Graduates 2019

From the Principal

Family,

Well I have to say that this has been a bitter-sweet week! Seniors took their last final exam of their high school careers. Last weekend, I was invited to the MAC Scholars end of year celebration. The band performed incredibly at the spring concert. We celebrated our Senior Class at Baccalaureate, and there was just so much talent there. I was able to share in the celebration of a few of our Seniors who will be exiting our Work and Transition Program. I had to say goodbye to my long-time colleague Marsha Manning as she prepares for retirement. A few of our teams valiantly brought their seasons to an end. Graduation was mind blowing. And the All Night Grad Party was too cool! I thought I was spent last week!

I want to thank all of you who were able to come out and support so many of the activities over this past week. It really was like Family pulling together to help the students to the finish line. And I appreciate that you all appreciate me being around when I am able to make it out to the various events. That really does drive me to make it out to more events.

As we wrap up the testing season, I am happy to report that our collaborative efforts in our academic focus area for this year of mathematics continue to improve in every sub-group.  So if you come across a Math, Special Education, or ESOL teacher, kindly pat them on their backs. They have put in the work. But more importantly, the students believed in them and themselves. We still have work to do in the area of closing the achievement gap, but it is nice to know that we are heading in the right direction. We owe it to our students, and we will be continuing the work to ensure that every student has the same opportunity to succeed at a very high level.

As we close this year out, while every student has been screaming at the top of their lungs that they are, “so done with school!”, I remind you that for the past 8 ½ months, we have provided them with a sense of security and structure. Regardless of what a student has at home, they all have that longing for belonging, and that structure and security will soon go away from them. This can be unnerving for some young people (adults too). So please keep an eye on your student, and your neighbor’s student. Check in with them, and ask how they feel about not having to go to school every day, and how they plan on structuring their days once school is over. And tell them I want to know.

Well that is it for this week. Thank you once again for your continued support. Every comment, and every smile means the world to me. If your student was a graduating Senior, please let them know that I said that I will miss them. They were an incredible class of young men and women. Take care Family. #OneStallion

Early Checkouts From School

The Attendance Office will not be able to accept calls for early checkouts thru the end of the year.

This is due to make-up examinations and final exam testing and staff not being able to interrupt those testing sessions.

All students MUST present a note from a parent to the Attendance Office at the beginning of the day to receive a checkout pass at that time.

Heads Up: 2019-20 School Year Calendar Changes; Notable Dates

New Virginia legislation requires that schools opening prior to Labor Day must be closed the Friday immediately preceding Labor Day. As a result, FCPS’ 2019-20 Standard School Year Calendar has changed and Friday, August 30, is now a holiday for students. In addition, the Board voted to move the March school planning day to Tuesday, March 3, 2020, to accommodate the 2020 presidential primary.

Other notable dates include the first day of school, August 26; Thanksgiving break, November 27-29; Winter break, December 23, 2019-January 3, 2020; Spring Break, April 6-10, 2020; and the last day of school, June 12, 2020. See the 2019-20 school year calendar
