Dear Members of the CHS Community:

What It Means To Be A Champion

As the 2018-2019 School Year draws to a close, I would like to thank everyone for a great graduation ceremony and All Night Graduation Party on Tuesday night (please see the note below thanking those that donated to the event). For those of you that did not attend the ceremony, I thought I should share my comments to the class of 2019.

Have a good weekend,

Scott

Good afternoon seniors, parents, staff members, friends and distinguished guests! It’s an honor to speak to you on this important day. Whether it’s new ideas or perspectives, I thank you, the class of 2019, for inspiring me, challenging me, and encouraging me to reflect about how I can continue to improve as a teacher, principal, and father.

The most rewarding part of my job is when I experience students being successful, especially after they have overcome significant challenges and setbacks along the way. I will never forget the anxiety and ultimate joy I felt as Stephanie Der served the last few winning points to give our volleyball team their first state championship and undefeated season in school history. I will always remember the sense of pride and comradery that I felt as watched the Forensics team celebrate their 4th state championship in a row. I cannot help but notice the pride that emanates from our band students when they emphasize their status as an Honor Band for the last three years.  Even as recent as yesterday and earlier today, I felt the adrenalin rush as our Boys Tennis Team seeks a second straight championship and our Girls Soccer Team competed in the state playoffs. Like all high schools in Fairfax County, our state championships are posted on the front of our building, and I recently passed by them yet again and thought about why I’m so proud of them and what the word “champion” really means.

“Champion” is actually a pretty interesting word if you think about it. We are all familiar with the definition, “A winner of first prize or first place in a competition.” Many of you have won district, regional or state championships in athletics, the visual or performing arts, yearbook, and other academic, career, and skill competitions. But champion also means, “A militant advocate or defender.” As proud as I am to be associated with those students that have won competitions of all kinds, I’m just as proud of those students that have championed many noble causes. Many of you have volunteered to help others through our honor societies and service clubs. Other students have championed charities that help the less fortunate or those that are suffering. Some of you have written stories in the Purple Tide or aired stories on the Knightly News to champion a cause or issue that you believe in. Some of you have championed political candidates and causes that you believe will best serve our local, state, national, and international communities.

In short, there are 661 champions of all kinds sitting in front of me, and the staff as well as your parents are proud of the champions that you have become.  I feel fortunate that I was able to share the last two years with you and have grown to respect, admire, and appreciate you as exceptional people. I care about you very much and congratulate each and every senior before me for your many achievements both in and out of the classroom.  I wish you all the best and encourage you to continue seeking championships of all kinds and to continue championing those causes that make the world a better place. Thank you.

Recent Student Successes

This is the next installment for the school year of what has become a weekly segment aimed at recognizing students for demonstrating recent improvement or achievement in academics, behavior or citizenship. At the end of each recognition, you will see the name of the nominating teacher or staff member. On a rotating basis, departments will nominate students.  I meet with recognized students each week to congratulate them in person..

  • Simon Condemi is an exemplary leader in class. He is incredibly patient in working with his peers and goes out of his way to make others feel welcome and safe. On numerous occasions, he has volunteered to partner with students that may not have a partner or close friends in class. When he finishes work early, Simon can be found checking in with other students to see how they are, patting them on the back, and encouraging/celebrating their accomplishments. He is everyone’s cheerleader. Any teacher would be lucky to have him. Every student is his friend. Ms. Allison Prell and Mr. Bradley Perrow
  • Yeimy Cameros Asencio just registered at CHS on May 3rd. In her short time here, she caught the immediate attention of her teachers because of her hard work, positive attitude, enthusiasm for learning, and determination. She is a fantastic addition to the CHS community and we're so impressed with her efforts. Keep up the great work, Yeimy! Ms. Debbie Wolin
  • Derrick Manzi is a 10th grader that transferred to Chantilly at the beginning of 3rd quarter. He has adjusted to our school culture and exceeded his teachers' expectations. He has advocated for himself, set goals, worked hard, and accomplished so much this year. He is a pleasure to work with. I am so proud of his academic and personal growth and look forward to see what he will accomplish his junior year. Ms. Shara Carter
  • Jeydi Rodas-Duque has worked really hard this year and I am so proud of her. I am honored to be her counselor! Ms. Becky Clonts
