Congratulations to the West Springfield Class of 2019!

Seniors participated in the Senior Walk and were recognized by staff and students at Irving!

ParentVue and StudentVue

FCPS Weekly Progress Reports will not be sent to parents Monday, June 10 through the remainder of this school year. Additionally, the Gradebook and Report Card modules in ParentVUE and StudentVUE will be closed Friday, June 21 at 4:00 p.m.

Medication Pick Up

A reminder - ALL medication stored in the clinic must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time (11:15 am) on the last day of school (Thursday, June 13).  Medication left in the clinic after that time will be discarded.  It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian.  Medication cannot be sent home with your student.

Friday, June 7th Team Activity/Celebration Day

Time to get pumped for an awesome day!  We encourage your student to wear clothing that is appropriate for P.E. type activities (relay races, kickball, basketball shooting contest, volleyball) and a t-shirt with her/his team color.   Many of the morning activities will be outside, so applying sunscreen before arriving to school is suggested.  Students are welcome to wear hats and bring water bottles.  The school will have several  water cooler stations outside with paper cups for students to access.

Irving Summer Assignments

To help our students keep their skills sharp over the summer, we ask students to complete summer assignments. Because reading is so important, the Irving Middle School English teachers would like you to read at least three books during the summer. Two of the three books need to be novels that tell a story. The third book does not need to (but may) be one that tells a story. For more information and to view the reading log, click here.

Students who will enter 7th grade in the fall are asked to complete a math packet that corresponds with the class they will take. This should be submitted to the student’s math teacher once school begins. Seventh grade students going into Algebra I HN do not need to complete a math packet this summer. Students who will enter 8th grade have the option to complete practice problems, but this will not be submitted to the teacher in the fall. Math packets can be found here.

Summer Reading Information for West Springfield HS

This summer, West Springfield High School will not be assigning graded summer reading or summer assignments to allow students and their families to recharge over the summer months.  The English Department encourages students to keep up their reading skills as they read for pleasure this summer, choosing fiction, non-fiction, magazines, graphic novels, and newspapers that interest and intrigue them. The Fairfax County Public Library Summer Reading Adventure program provides contests, recommendations, and prizes to encourage reading over the summer:  https://research.fairfaxcounty.gov/summer-reading

8th Grade Dance - Friday, June 7 - 6:00-8:00 pm

Please note the 8th grade dance is NOT a formal event. We will have signs around the building regarding what is and is not appropriate to wear. In the past, students have worn a pair of slacks and collared shirt or a skirt/blouse or dress, again NO formal attire or high heels are required for this dance (often high heels are taken off within about 10 minutes of arriving…). Also, students often attend in groups, so having a “date” is NOT a requirement to attend. The purpose of this dance is to have fun and celebrate our 8th grade students' accomplishments before they head out for the summer and on to high school. Only 8th grade students attending Irving Middle School may attend the dance.

Attention Parents!  The 8th grade dance is on Friday, June 7th from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.  We are in need of chaperones and light refreshments for the dance. Please see the sign ups below volunteer.  Thank you in advance for your help!  If you have questions, please email Emily Geary (emgeary@fcps.edu)

Google Suite for Education Summer Access

G Suite for Education is available to students over the summer. All files created by, or shared with, students will continue to be available to them. Explore what your student is working on in G Suite for Education by having your student log in to his or her FCPS G Suite for Education account at home. Your student will use his or her network login credentials to access G Suite for Education. Students have the ability to reset their password using the Account Recovery service, even over the summer. However, recovery options must be set up in advance. Your student can set up those options by logging into the FCPS Account Manager.

Summer is also the perfect time to revisit the rules in your household for technology and media use, and set clear expectations for your child. The FCPS Digital Citizenship website has Device Contracts and Family Media Agreements that can help you guide family conversations. There is also a free online Digital Citizenship course available for parents and their children to work through together.

More information on G Suite for Education can be found on the FCPS Website.

Fairfax County Public Library will visit with Irving English classes on June 11th!

Librarians from the Fairfax County Public Library will be visiting Irving English classes on June 11th to teach students how to set up and access public library eBooks.  Using eBooks through the public library is one way students can access a variety of books for their summer reading assignments, for free!  These eBooks can be accessed through the FCPL Libby App from a phone, Kindle, Nook, or other device.

If you would like your student to use your pre-existing library account, please make sure that your child has both the account number and the password on that day.

Students who do not already have a public library card will be able to get one. On Monday, June 3, your child will be given a library card form to complete and return by Wednesday, June 5. Students will receive their cards on the 11th. An electronic version of the form is attached. If you would not like your child to get a library card, please contact your child’s English teacher.

Note that younger siblings may also get library cards using a copy of the same form.

If you have any questions, please contact Mary Ann Monk (mamonk1@fcps.edu).

Lost and Found Items

Irving’s Lost and Found is on display for all students to check during their lunch period. At the end of every month we wash and donate all clothing, lunchboxes, and water bottles. If your child has lost an item, please advise them to check for it during lunch. We will make announcements the week up to donation day to remind students to claim their belongings. If you would like to inquire about an item, please email bekirtner@fcps.edu

Library News

The end of the year is drawing near.  As that comes, we need to start alerting students about what library books they need to return.  Beginning this week, students will receive weekly updates, through their English classes about what items they have on loan.  Hopefully most of these things will be returned before I start sending text alerts to parents in the last week of school!  Please ask your child if there are things that need to be returned to the library, and help remind them to drop them off.

As summer is around the corner, we’re excited to recommend summer reading titles to anyone who drops by (students or parents!)

Thank you!

Mary Ann Monk & Diane Gawalt, Librarians

After School

Thank you for a wonderful year!

Our after school program has ended for the school year.

There are no activities after school on Friday, June 7th.

There are no after school activities the week of June 10th. All students will be dismissed at 2:15p.

Parent Feedback Requested for our After School Program

Below is a link for a quick survey about the Middle School After-School Program. The survey should take no longer than 5-10 minutes to complete. The survey is an important component of the after-school program evaluation and is critical for future funding. The more responses we receive, the more valuable and reliable the data. The responses not only allow us to assess the impact of the after-school program but they help drive program improvement and program quality.   This survey has been approved by the FCPS Internal Survey Review Committee.  Seal  Approval  Number 19225.

Over 95% of our students participated in the after-school program this school year, with over 22,000 occurrences of students staying after-school.  Thank you for your continued support of the Middle School After-School Program!

All survey responses are due by the last day of school, June 14.
