Ceremony

Sixth graders at their Moving Up Ceremony.

Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Our final week of school has been full of joy and celebration here at Oak Hill!  The 6th grade moving up ceremony and celebration went well and grade level parties/picnics have been lots of fun for all students, staff, and parents.  Thank you to all the Oak Hill parents and family members who attended these events and have volunteered during the school year.  Your time and effort have been greatly appreciated. For those who are returning next year, I look forward to seeing you at our combined Open House/Back to School Night in August.  Please see below for specific grade level information.

We hope you enjoy a wonderful summer with your children and make reading and learning an important part of each and every day.  And one final congratulations to our 6th grade students!

Thank you for a fantastic school year and being #allinOHES!!

Sincerely,

Holly DeVore, Principal

Standards of Learning Update

Recently, students in grades 3-6 completed the Virginia Standards of Learning Assessments.  At this time most of our preliminary scores are in and we are proud to announce that 95% of our students passed their Reading SOL and 97% pass their math SOL.  Individual SOL scores will be sent with students tomorrow in their report card envelope.  While this is only one measure of progress, we are proud of the work our students demonstrated.  Congratulations to the staff for their collaboration on teams and making sure the needs of students come first.

Effective July 1, the Tdap booster will no longer be required for students entering sixth grade. Instead, the Tdap booster will be required for students entering seventh grade. Students, including current sixth graders, who have received a Tdap at age seven or older will meet the school immunization requirement for Tdap and will not need another dose prior to entering seventh grade.

Fairfax County Public Schools tracks compliance with this state requirement and seventh grade students who do not meet the requirement before August 26 will not be able to start school.

Rising 7th graders at Rachel Carson MS

We wanted to share with you the summer reading assignment for next year. We would like you all to read at least ONE new (to you) book of your choice during the summer. Not sure what book to read? Check out this site to help you decide. Our goal is to promote reading for pleasure. Whether you’re on a plane, in the car, at the beach, pool, or in the comfort of your own home, it’s great to have a book in hand! At the beginning of the school year, your English teacher will share with you an assignment that you will complete to share about the book you read. We are so excited to see what everyone picks to read over summer, and look forward to welcoming you to RCMS.

2nd PBL

Second graders with their persuasive letters.

Second Grade PBL

Second grade students questioned, “How can we, as environmental activists, write persuasive letters to convince the local community to protect the Monarchs and milkweed?”  Students learned about a monarchs life cycle and the importance of milkweed.  Teachers and students voted for the top two letters from each class based on how well they persuaded us.  A few ideas include: Monarchs don’t hurt us so we shouldn’t hurt them.  Caterpillars need the milkweed to lay eggs on and feed…a lot!  Without milkweed the monarchs will become extinct.  We hope that the next time you see a Monarch flying, you will think about protecting them too.
