LONGFELLOW RECEIVES THE TOP HONOR OF 2019 GOVERNOR’S AWARD FOR EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE

Only five schools in the state earned the Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence, the highest VIP award.
To earn the Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence, schools and school divisions must meet all state and federal achievement benchmarks and achieve all applicable excellence goals. “The teachers, principals, superintendents, administrators and support staff of these award-winning schools and divisions share a commitment to deeper learning, expanding opportunity and preparing all students for success,” said Superintendent of Public Instruction James Lane. “I look forward to visiting as many of these learning communities as possible during the coming months to offer my personal congratulations for their outstanding work preparing young Virginians for what comes next.”

LOCKER CLEAN OUT - PLEASE REUSE OR RECYCLE YOUR LOCKER SHELVES

Please send a trash bag to school with your child for locker clean out. 7th graders will clean out their lockers on June 10th and 8th graders on June 11th. They will bring everything home and we ask that you try to recycle or reuse as much as possible at home to lessen the environmental impact.
Please remind your 7th graders to bring their locker shelves home to use next year. If one of their locker pieces is broken, they will be able to ask for a replacement at Open House next year.
8th grade students can either save their organizer for a sibling or put it against the hallway walls to donate it to the PTA. We will take entire locker shelf assemblies OR just separate pieces; whatever they have to give to us. If one of their pieces is broken or missing, we will take the rest of the pieces. We will take locker shelves that have already been decorated with duct tape or marker or paint or anything.  Thank you.

Please sign up here to help give them a fun sendoff to high school!

7TH GRADE TEAM ACTIVITIES

In celebration of a great school year, the Longfellow Middle School seventh grade team leaders are planning another exciting closing activity for our students on the last full day of school, Wednesday, June 12th.  We are asking for small donations to our team raffles.  Some suggestions for raffle prizes include the following:

• $5 gift cards to Zinga, ITunes, Chipotle, Santini’s, Robeks, 7-11, Listrani’s, Barnes and Noble, Starbucks, McDonald’s, Amazon, or any local business (no checks please)
• Small plastic candy jar
• New stuffed animal
• Set of writing pens or thin markers

• $5 donation to contribute toward raffle prizes

Students are asked to wear the following color tee shirts for team identification on June 12th:  Explorers - navy blue, Polaris - white, Hesperus - green, Guardians - light blue, and Red Foxes -  red.

AFTER SCHOOL PARENT SURVEY

Longfellow parents, below is a link for a quick survey about the Middle School After-School Program. The survey should take no longer than 5-10 minutes to complete. The survey is an important component of the after-school program evaluation and is critical for future funding. The more responses we receive, the more valuable and reliable the data. The responses not only allow us to assess the impact of the after-school program, but they help drive program improvement and program quality.   This survey has been approved by the FCPS Internal Survey Review Committee.  Seal  Approval  Number 19225.
Over 95% of our students participated in the after-school program this school year, with over 22,000 occurrences of students staying after-school.  Thank you for your continued support of the Middle School After-School Program! Please complete survey by the last day of school, Thursday, June 13th.

FAIRFAX COUNTY SCHOOL HEALTH PROMOTION

“Some Things Are Not Meant to Be Shared”
More than 20,000 kids a year need medical attention due to medicine misuse. Medications can help us, but only when used as directed by a healthcare professional. Teens need guidance to avoid the hazardous consequences of medication misuse.
Prescription drug misuse involves three behaviors:
1. Taking more of a prescription medication than prescribed,
2. Taking a prescription medication for a reason different than prescribed, and
3. Sharing or taking someone else’s prescription medication.

Help prevent prescription drug misuse by keeping your medications secure, following the instructions on the label and being a good role model. Stick to these safe practices and encourage your family, friends and students to do the same.

Students:
Your peers can be a positive force in your life – but, sometimes friends can influence you to do things that you may not want to do. Negative peer pressure can lead you to skip class, cheat on a test or abuse substances, like drugs or alcohol. Here are a couple of tips to help you steer clear of harmful situations:
• Avoid peers that influence you to do things that seem wrong or dangerous – for example, some friends may convince you to use medication for its unintended purpose. Trust your instincts and speak with an adult if you feel like something isn’t right.
• Learn how to say “no” – advocating for yourself is one of the best decisions you can make. Try spending time with like-minded peers. This may mean avoiding the group that experiments with drugs or alcohol, and joining in with those who participate in extracurricular activities like basketball, musical theater or track and field.

Staff:
To help your students navigate peer pressure, remind them to speak to a trusted adult like a counselor or teacher when they are feel pressured. Maintain open communication with your students so they feel safe enough to speak with you about their concerns. Talk to your students about certain behaviors that may impact their wellbeing so they can learn to take positive steps towards maintaining good health.
