Important PTA message

Required Position still vacant on the 2019-2020 LJMS PTA Board

The LJMS PTA is still seeking a Secretary and Treasurer for the next school year.  According to the Fairfax County PTA, we cannot have a PTA without a Treasurer.   The Secretary is apparently not a required position but having a Secretary in place will take a lot of the duties off of other Board members.

Mahesh Patil and Barbara Hamill were elected to the positions of PTA President and PTA Vice-President, respectively.  They have both had prior experience in a PTA Presidency role, Barbara's at LJMS a couple of years ago, and Barbara is returning for a second year as PTA Vice-President.  Not only will you have experienced people on the Board with you next year, you will have access to the outgoing Secretary and Treasurer to help transition the materials and processes to you before the school year kicks off.   Please note that parents of rising 7th graders are welcomed to serve as officers in the PTA.  It is a great way to meet people and get involved as a new parent at the school.

The PTA also seeks a Staff Appreciation Chairperson.  Our other key Chairpersons (Spirit Wear, Restaurant Night, and Communications) have agreed to return next year so you will be joining a solid team of volunteers to get the school year off to a good start.

We need to submit our new list of officers to the Virginia PTA by June 15th so please, reach out to anyone you know who will have a child at LJMS next year and would be a potentially good fit for one of these positions or consider volunteering yourself.  If you have any questions or leads, or are interested in one of these roles, please contact Holly Dubbeling at ptaljms@gmail.com and help us build on a great year.

Volunteer and Donation Needs for 8th Grade Party

The Luther Jackson Middle School SCA is busy planning the 8th Grade Party.  They are planning a fun-filled dance celebration to be held on Friday, June 7 from 6:30 – 9:00 pm in the school gym. All 8th grade students are invited to attend this “Dancing With the Stars” Hollywood and celebrity-themed social event. In order to keep the cost of the event low for students, the SCA has reached out to the PTA for the following:

1) Donations.  Any money received will be used to help offset the cost of pizza, party rentals (snow cone machine, etc.), DJ, and decorations.  Cash or checks (made payable to “LJMS” with “SCA Dance” in the memo line) can be delivered to Mrs. Maggee Albertson in the office by Friday, May 24th

2) Volunteers.  Many volunteers are needed to sell tickets, setup and decorate, and chaperone the party,  If you can donate some time, please sign-up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0845aaae23a1fe3-8thgrade1

3) Snacks, candy, drinks, paper products, and Wal-mart gift cards to help purchase any items still missing.  If you can donate an item, please sign-up here:  https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0845aaae23a1fe3-8thgrade

4) Other ways to get involved.  If you would like to help the SCA plan for or know of anyone who would like to help with creating decorations for the dance, please let us know!  In addition, if you know of anyone who has life-size cardboard cutouts of celebrities (such as characters from Harry Potter, the Avengers, etc.), please ask if they would be interested in letting us borrow them for the dance. We’re hoping to provide students with multiple opportunities to take photos so they can remember this night!
