From the Principal's Desk
Dear Members of the CHS Community:
It is with a heavy heart that I let all of you know that a member of our Chantilly Family passed away last night due to flu and pneumonia. Rohit Kulkarni was a freshman this year and formerly a student at Rocky Run Middle School. He participated in robotics, loved Chantilly High School, and was an outstanding student. Rohit was very strong and brave and loved by all. Funeral arrangements are still in process and will be communicated to the CHS community as soon as they are available. His passing will be felt throughout our school and community, and we send blessings to his family, friends and teachers at this most difficult time.

Recognitions
Congratulations to Iris Malave Compher for receiving a Counselor of the Year Recognition from the Potomac and Chesapeake Association for College Admission Counseling at their annual conference last month. She was praised for her impact on constituents in the admission process, advocacy for students, commitment to equity and access for all, and thoroughness in her daily work. In addition to this award, Mrs. Compher was awarded a “Colin Powell Award” for her continued assistance with Military Recruiting. Mrs. Compher is an amazing person, who has served our school and community very well the past four year. Congratulations Iris!

Upcoming Events at CHS
Tonight and all day tomorrow, May 17 and 18, CHS will welcome twenty-three middle and high school band programs from the DMV region for our 39th annual Chantilly Invitational Jazz Festival! The CIJF was created 39 years ago to provide an opportunity for high school, professional jazz musicians, and educators to share, learn, and compete. In addition to this year’s middle school and high school ensembles, we’re delighted to welcome the National Jazz Workshop All-Star Jazz Orchestra and the US Navy Band Commodores as feature ensembles this year! The Chantilly Invitational Jazz Festival has grown to include over thirty performing groups celebrating America’s greatest art form. All performances are FREE and open to the public. Opportunities
The Office of Talent Acquisition & Management (TAM) will host a Back2Fairfax Seminar at the Gatehouse Administration Center on Wednesday, May 29, 2019, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
This event will give our current high school seniors, FCPS graduates, and current FCPS employees an opportunity to hear from existing operational employees in our Information Technology (IT), Facilities, Transportation, and Construction offices. Participants will attend breakout sessions to include the following topics: resume essentials; preparing for an interview; supporting and repairing computer hardware, AV equipment, and software applications in our schools and offices; and FCPS trade careers such as carpenters, roofers, electricians, and HVAC technicians.
There will also be networking time for visiting exhibitor booths from Apple Federal Credit Union, Benefit Services, Client Services, Food Services, Lord Fairfax Community College for Trade Careers, Salary Services, and Transportation.

Recent Student Successes
This is the next installment for the school year of what has become a weekly segment aimed at recognizing students for demonstrating recent improvement or achievement in academics, behavior or citizenship. At the end of each recognition, you will see the name of the nominating teacher or staff member. On a rotating basis, departments will nominate students. I meet with recognized students each week to congratulate them in person.

Aryaa Bhole has done an outstanding job improving her study skills. After using her self-advocacy skills to determine how she could improve her grades, Aryaa learned to be better prepared for tests. She applied herself, studied hard, and raised reading test scores, earning an "A" on her final test of the year. Ms. Elaine Birchfield

Kartik Chugh scored an 89 on the Java MTA industry certification exam. He has also completed work on a code editor plugin called IRIS that uses machine learning to identify and display patterns that appear a developer's code; these patterns are used by IRIS to perform autocomplete, highlight pattern examples, and flag pattern violations. He submitted a research paper discussing IRIS to the IEEE Symposium on Visual Languages and Human-Centric Computing for prospective publication sometime in October this year. Mr. Matt Keel

Derrick Manzi transferred to Chantilly High School in January 2019. He quickly made friends and adjusted to his new school. Derrick is a student who willingly volunteers to help teachers. I've enjoyed having Derrick in my classes. Ms. Karen Beers

Matthew McCurry has been a tremendous asset to the Entrepreneurship program this school year. While in E-ship 2 he has assisted greatly with both the Purple Express and the Spirit Box. He even created a website that can be used for years to come! Ms. Karyn Jones

Hridya Pillai is excelling in Exploring Health Science and Language of Medicine and participated in District HOSA Competition earning 3rd place in HOSA Bowl. In State HOSA Competition, Hridya earned 2nd place as part of a Medical Debate Team. Hridya will attend the HOSA International Leadership Competition in June and compete in Biomedical Debate. Jose Romero-Gonzalez is one of the finest young men in the Academy. Currently, Jose takes advantage of two course offerings in the Academy; Criminal Justice and Automotive Technology 2. Jose is reliable, respectful, a team player and a leader amongst his peers. He consistently demonstrates the ability to think critically and solve complex problems. He perseveres in the face of adversity and eagerly accepts challenges. CTE classes often assess students on a 1-5 competency scale that ranges from cannot perform to can perform with limited supervision to can teach others. As a leader, Jose willingly, with patience, shares his knowledge with others. In the community, he volunteers as a Police Explorer. Next year he is slated to return for Automotive Technology 3 and wants to serve as a teacher’s assistant for Auto Tech. He is a pleasure to have in class.
