Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Dedication, and Excellence

From the Principal

Family,

First week of testing is down and things moved along quite smoothly. I want to ask that if you have a moment, to please thank each of the teachers in this building for coming together to take on the task of end-of-year assessments because it takes the entire school to do this right. Our testing coordinator lays out the plan, and every teacher must have hands in, and last week, it showed that we are “Family”. So reach out to them if you have a moment and pat this great group of educators on the back!

I would like to thank all of the parents that have complied with the check-out policy for students by having your child bring in notes in the mornings. This has made the process of your child checking out during the day much easier. While I know that it is impossible to foresee all emergency issues that require immediate checkout during the day, I ask that you plan your student checkouts to the best extent as possible to avoid conflicts with testing. And when calling in, please be patient with our staff. The attendance office is buzzing right now and very, very busy. We want to be able to provide quality customer service and your patience makes that much easier.

Over the last few weeks, we have been celebrating the achievements of our students that are involved in some sort of extracurricular activity. We have some very talented students that are doing great things (I will come back to this), but we have some awesome students who are making waves elsewhere as well. Below are out students who have been invited to attend on of Virginia’s highly selective residential Governor’s School programs for summer 2019. Please join me in recognizing them for what will definitely be an awesome experience for them this summer.

Now, if you didn’t see the Chicago show put on by the South County Theatre and Band Departments, you robbed yourself of a treat. I want to give our very own Molly Rumberger and Kevin Engdahl a shout out for the work they have put in with their students. The students simply knocked it out of the park.

As we wind down the year, be sure to clear up any debts that may exist for your student. Also be sure to have your child turn in any books, or other resources that may belong to the school. This can impact what we have to spend money on over the summer, and we want our students to be able to have the resources that will allow them to have the most dynamic experience possible while here at South County HS.

Please continue to have conversations with your students about appropriate attire for school. We are experiencing warmer weather and want to ensure that students are dressing for school, rather than their social events. The FCPS dress code states:

Wear clothes that are appropriate for a K-12 learning environment.

Wear clothes that do not:

  • Include images or words that are vulgar, discriminatory, or obscene.
  • Include images or words that promote illegal or violent activity such as gang symbols, the unlawful use of weapons, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or drug paraphernalia or clothing that contains threats.
  • Expose private areas or an excessive amount of bare skin.

I truly appreciate your assistance with this.

The Band Program once again received the Honor Band recognition this year from the Virginia Band and Orchestra Director’s Association (VBODA).  The marching band received a superior rating at the VBODA Marching Band State Assessment in October and the Symphonic Band received a superior rating at the VBODA Concert Band State Assessment in March.  This is the 10th time that South Count has received this honor in the school’s 14 year history! We look forward to adding the 2019 achievement number on the front of the school in the very near future!

Finally, I wanted to share that our DECA group continued to shine as they earned honors at the International Competition, which is just short of the Galaxy competition to which we have been having problems figuring out how to transport our students to. There are too many names to list, but here are the categories that our outstanding students placed in:

Overall World Finalist—Top 10 Overall

World Finalist-Top 20 Overall

Top 10 World Recognition for a Role Play case study

Preliminary Top 100 Competency Recognition

If you are a DECA parent, I know you are as proud as we are of their work! They represented us very well.

Thank you for sharing your students for another week with us. We are blessed to have them! Enjoy the weather and rest up. Take care. #OneStallion

Gary

Early Checkouts From School

Beginning on May 6th, the Attendance Office will not be able to accept calls for early checkouts thru the end of the year. This is due to AP, SOL, and final exam testing and staff not being able to interrupt those testing sessions. All students MUST present a note from a parent to the Attendance Office at the beginning of the day to receive a checkout pass at that time.

The library will be closed for SOL testing from May 6th-May 24th. This includes being closed before and after school. FCPS Library System

The FCPS Library System is being prepared to switch to a new computer system and the final due dates for library materials set by FCPS Library Services are fast approaching for the transition.   In preparation for the switch we need your help to clear all students records of books and fines by the end of the year.  The final due date for seniors will be May 20th, and the final due date for underclassmen will be May 31st. These due dates were set by FCPS Library Services to ensure a smooth transition to the new system. Notices for overdue books are sent to students via their English teacher, and students also receive pop-up reminders on school computers of overdue library books and fines. Please note:  These notices are separate from finance and textbook notices, as they are through the library circulation system.  Please ask your student(s) to be on the lookout for any of those notices and pop-up reminders.  If your student(s) have questions about their library account, please ask them to stop by the library to have their account checked. Thank you!

Fair Oaks Prom Dress Shop

Fairfax County Public School Students Make Prom Dreams Come True

Fairfax County Public School (FCPS) marketing students from Centreville High School and the Fair Oaks Classroom on the Mall program are opening their annual Fair Oaks Prom Dress Shop on Friday, April 12th. The dress shop, which has been in business for thirteen years, has helped hundreds of financially challenged students attend prom in style each spring. Donations of stylish, high-quality, dry-cleaned prom dresses and select accessories can either be dropped off in the main office of Centreville High School between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. or at the shop in Fair Oaks Mall during the shop hours listed below.

Centreville High School Fashion Marketing students started collecting donated dresses in 2006 as a way to combine their interests in fashion with community service. They quickly came to the conclusion that students would not feel comfortable “shopping” for a dress at school. They decided that the shop should be set up in another location to give students a more authentic shopping experience, which led them to partner with the Fair Oaks Classroom on the Mall program.

The Classroom on the Mall students apply the retail marketing and visual merchandising skills learned throughout the school year to transform their classroom into the Fair Oaks Prom Dress Shop. “This is an excellent opportunity to accomplish several goals at once,” said Miranda Schick, Centreville High School and Classroom on the Mall Marketing Teacher. “First, students apply marketing lessons learned to a real-world retail environment. Second, they support the School Board’s goals of helping students succeed beyond the classroom through their ‘Portrait of a Graduate’. This includes communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and global citizenship skills.”

The Fair Oaks Prom Dress Shop is located on the upper level of Fair Oaks Mall behind the white barricade next to Build a Bear Workshop. Students from any area high school, not just Fairfax County Public School students, who are in need of a prom dress, and do not have the funds to purchase one, can come and shop from hundreds of donated dresses and accessories. They must show a valid student ID, or other form of school identification, in order to select a free dress during the following store hours:

Friday, May 17th                               4:00 p.m.—7:00 p.m.

Saturday, May 18th                           2:00 p.m.—5:00 p.m.

Sunday, May 19th                             1:00 p.m.—4:00 p.m.
