Canterbury Woods Weekly Happenings

From the Principal's Desk

May begins this week, a time when we already begin to turn our thoughts to next year. It is a month when we reflect on progress – from the wide lens of the School Improvement and Innovation Plan (SIIP), to the focused lens of each and every student in our care.

Several of you came to our PTA meeting last fall when I presented our SIIP. We had two main goals this year: first, to promote every student’s development as an effective communicator in a variety of instructional contexts such as Project Based Learning and CETA strategies, and second, to promote our students’ growth in reading and/or math by targeting their areas of need with purposeful interventions. We are proud to say that we are on track to successfully meet both of these goals this year! Come to the PTA membership meeting on May 14 for a more detailed school update.

In turning our attention to next year, we appreciate the time you are taking to share insight into your child’s needs through our classroom placement input form, due to the office by Monday, May 20. If you have additional input about our school as we plan for next year, my door is always open.

And finally, we want to make you aware of a very important day—the kick off event for our next school year! Our first annual combined Back to School/Open House event was well-received last fall; the vast majority of over 300 parents responded to our feedback survey that they preferred a combined event, and they preferred morning to afternoon. You asked…we listened! School begins Monday, August 26, so we invite you and your children into the building the Friday morning beforehand.

SAVE THE DATE!

Soccer

Physical Education Happenings

We hope your children have been sharing how well they have been playing in our soccer unit in physical education classes over these past several weeks. With only a few weeks left of school we still have many exciting games and skill building activities planned. In the primary grades, students are beginning the whiffle ball unit and will transition to fitness/running games. Upper grade students are participating in a  lacrosse unit which is new this year and then we finish the year with whiffle ball/softball.

Field Day is just around the corner and we’re hoping for warm and dry weather on Friday, May 31! Grades K-3 will be from 10:00-12:00 and Grades 4-6 will be from 1:00-3:00.  Please join us and come out and see our children having fun, laughing, and enjoying the company of their friends while participating in the many field day activities being offered.

We have many activity centers planned for each session and we still need parent volunteers during our fourth through sixth grade time slots (1:00-3:00).  If you would like to volunteer or review when you signed up please go to the sign-up genius link below:

Drama Club Performs Hansel and Gretel

On May 2nd, students from the CWES Drama Club performed “Hansel and Gretel: The Funny Version” for students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade.  Students in the club met on Thursday mornings before school to prepare.  They only met for 8 sessions before putting on the play and did an amazing job!  The audience loved the humor and expression the actors brought to the stage.  Bravo to all involved!
