Weekly News From South County HS

Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Dedication, and Excellence

From the Principal

Family,

IT has been a great week of celebrating our athletes this week. I have been out at the fields to congratulate our senior athletes this week at the various Senior Nights. It has been awesome to not only have a brief period of face time with them, but also to be able to shake the hands of their parents and thank them for sharing their students with us. The amount of sheer talent that is in this building is incredible. And they play sports too! We also had the College Signing Ceremony on Wednesday which was a huge hit. We had 25 senior athletes to participate in the signing event and again to see the numbers of supporters present was awesome. I really appreciate everyone coming out and showing our student athletes how much of a Family we really are!

Our CAT B staff led by Mr. Walter Bagwell along with our Adaptive PE teacher, Tanya Smith, put on a Best Buddies event and hosted our South County pyramid students on Wednesday afternoon. I am so proud of the students that are a part of this outstanding club as they worked, ate, and played along with the CAT B student community.   This was such a great event!

I got to hang out with our fantastic students who are a part of the yearbook staff. The culmination of all of their hard work will be an outstanding pictorial summary of our 2018-19 school year along with tons of copy that will describe our growth! Be sure to take advantage of the opportunity to purchase this keepsake. I have committed to purchasing one and hope that I get as many students to sign it as a memento of my first year back!

As we come closer to the end of the year, please keep an eye out for your children. SOL’s, AP exams, and final exams can put a lot of pressure on our young people. Teachers and staff have been instructed to monitor behaviors carefully. We want to continue to create and broaden this Family environment. If your child is showing signs of some of the end-of-year pressures, please don’t hesitate to let us know. We want to try and provide as much support for them as we can.

As the weather warms, outfits change….. Please be sure to discuss with your children the expectations around the FCPS dress code. Enough said!

Finally, if you are looking for something to do this weekend, come and support the outstanding effort put on by our theatre department as they put on the South County version of Chicago. The play will show May 3, 4, 10 & 11 at 7:00pm. Admission is $12 for students and $15 for adults. This will be an outstanding show. I am looking forward to seeing all of you there.

Remember we will be requiring that all checkout requests be done in writing and delivered to the Attendance Office in the morning so we are not interrupting students during testing sessions. Have a great weekend! #OneStallion

Early Checkouts From School

Beginning on May 6th, the Attendance Office will not be able to accept calls for early checkouts thru the end of the year. This is due to AP, SOL, and final exam testing and staff not being able to interrupt those testing sessions. All students MUST present a note from a parent to the Attendance Office at the beginning of the day to receive a checkout pass at that time.

Library Closed For SOL Testing

The library will be closed for SOL testing from May 6th-May 24th. This includes being closed before and after school. Please encourage your student(s) to come to the library before May 6th for any books they may want to check out for that time period. Please also encourage your student(s) to identify an alternate place to print assignments if needed during that time.

FCPS Library System

The FCPS Library System is being prepared to switch to a new computer system and the final due dates for library materials set by FCPS Library Services are fast approaching for the transition.   In preparation for the switch we need your help to clear all students records of books and fines by the end of the year.  The final due date for seniors will be May 20th, and the final due date for underclassmen will be May 31st. These due dates were set by FCPS Library Services to ensure a smooth transition to the new system. Notices for overdue books are sent to students via their English teacher, and students also receive pop-up reminders on school computers of overdue library books and fines. Please note:  These notices are separate from finance and textbook notices, as they are through the library circulation system.  Please ask your student(s) to be on the lookout for any of those notices and pop-up reminders.  If your student(s) have questions about their library account, please ask them to stop by the library to have their account checked. Thank you!

Fair Oaks Prom Dress Shop

Fairfax County Public School Students Make Prom Dreams Come True

Fairfax County Public School (FCPS) marketing students from Centreville High School and the Fair Oaks Classroom on the Mall program are opening their annual Fair Oaks Prom Dress Shop on Friday, April 12th. The dress shop, which has been in business for thirteen years, has helped hundreds of financially challenged students attend prom in style each spring. Donations of stylish, high-quality, dry-cleaned prom dresses and select accessories can either be dropped off in the main office of Centreville High School between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. or at the shop in Fair Oaks Mall during the shop hours listed below.

Centreville High School Fashion Marketing students started collecting donated dresses in 2006 as a way to combine their interests in fashion with community service. They quickly came to the conclusion that students would not feel comfortable “shopping” for a dress at school. They decided that the shop should be set up in another location to give students a more authentic shopping experience, which led them to partner with the Fair Oaks Classroom on the Mall program.

The Classroom on the Mall students apply the retail marketing and visual merchandising skills learned throughout the school year to transform their classroom into the Fair Oaks Prom Dress Shop. “This is an excellent opportunity to accomplish several goals at once,” said Miranda Schick, Centreville High School and Classroom on the Mall Marketing Teacher. “First, students apply marketing lessons learned to a real-world retail environment. Second, they support the School Board’s goals of helping students succeed beyond the classroom through their ‘Portrait of a Graduate’. This includes communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and global citizenship skills.”

The Fair Oaks Prom Dress Shop is located on the upper level of Fair Oaks Mall behind the white barricade next to Build a Bear Workshop. Students from any area high school, not just Fairfax County Public School students, who are in need of a prom dress, and do not have the funds to purchase one, can come and shop from hundreds of donated dresses and accessories. They must show a valid student ID, or other form of school identification, in order to select a free dress during the following store hours:

Sunday, May 5th                               1:00 p.m.—4:00 p.m.

Friday, May 17th                               4:00 p.m.—7:00 p.m.

Saturday, May 18th                           2:00 p.m.—5:00 p.m.

Sunday, May 19th                             1:00 p.m.—4:00 p.m.
