Cardinal's Message

Cardinal's Message

Dear Cunningham Park Families and Friends,

What a busy week of hands-on learning we've had here, at Cunningham Park!  Many grade levels took advantage of the great weather and traveled away from the building for field trips.  For example, on Tuesday, Kindergarten went to the National Zoo and enjoyed the many animals who were out and about.  Also on Tuesday, fifth grade traveled to the Baltimore Aquarium.  While there, many students had the opportunity to touch various forms of sea life, including a sting ray and a jellyfish!  Wednesday, Head Start went to Frying Pan Park to investigate barnyard animals.  Thursday, second graders went to Imagination Stage and saw an interactive “choose your own adventure’-style play where they got to help decide the main character’s actions.  Students were excited to lead the play in the direction that they saw fit.  And finally on Friday, our sixth grade went to Manassas Battlefield, where they hiked among the some of the very historic sites they have been researching in their Civil War studies.

We cap the week off with a celebration - announcing the birth of our newest Cardinal!  Our PE teacher, Mrs. Petty, welcomed daughter, Cora, this afternoon.  The Petty's are all doing well, and we couldn't be more excited for them!

Tomorrow, the PTA has organized a harvest of the lettuce growing in our school garden.  Come join in the fun and help yourselves to some veggies at 9:00-11:00am!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Katie Le, Principal and Jon Kemmerer, Assistant Principal

CPES' annual Fine Arts Festival filled the hallway, gym, and cafe with art, movement, music, poetry, and culture as students shared favorite songs on recorder and in Spanish.

2019-2020 Class Placement Parent Input

To help with making decisions about student placements for next year, we would like input from you, our students’ parents. While we will not take requests for particular teachers, we appreciate knowing your thoughts on the types of learning environment that help your child thrive.

We value parent input. If you feel there is pertinent information to support your child’s success for the upcoming school year, email Katie Le at CPESParentInput@fcps.edu by May 10th.

During our annual Fine Arts Festival, students (and some parents!) got moving in the gym for physical fitness.

SOL Assessment Schedule Considerations for Families who Celebrate Ramadan

This spring, the SOL assessment window has significant overlap with Ramadan, the Muslim holy month marked by daily fasting from sunrise to sunset. Ramadan 2019 begins on the evening of Sunday, May 5th and ends with Eid-al-Fitr on Wednesday, June 5th

All  assessment sessions at CPES are in the morning, but if you have a specific concern about the scheduling in light of the dates of Ramadan, please contact Jon Kemmerer to determine what options might be available to address the student’s needs.

An FCPS This Week e-newsletter article will be published soon to directly communicate this overlap to families and provide additional details.

P2 Focus Next Week: Leadership

This strength means that you value each member of your group and inspire people to do their best. Leadership can be both formal and informal. It is concerned with getting others to do what needs to be done while maintaining group morale to ensure readiness to act in the future. This character strength’s focus is on the personal qualities of leaders, rather than the practice of leadership. These qualities include the ability to understand others and inspire them toward a common goal, the capacity to mitigate conflict and mold consensus, and the desire to lead other people. -Positivity Project

SOL Assessment Schedule

For your planning purposes, below is the testing schedule for SOLs this spring.  All assessments begin at the start of the school day and are untimed, so students may take as much time in one day as they need.  It is helpful to avoid scheduling outside appointments for students on an assessment day.
