Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Dedication, and Excellence

From the Principal

Family,

I was sharing with a colleague that after coming back from Spring Break, I know that the end of the year is near. But right about now, everything seems to be coming at me at once! And then I thought about how the students must feel. Just after dismissal on Friday, a student was sharing with a teacher that Teacher Appreciation Week falls at the worst possible time of the year. We asked her why, and she replied, “Because teachers are so demanding now due to the time of year, and it’s just difficult to be appreciative of them right now!”

I guess I can’t blame her and the rest of her peers. I will be sharing this with the staff for us to be sensitive to the demands of our students during this time. I ask that you chat with your students about asking for help and taking care of themselves during this stressful time of the year. I am seeing that just because they are smiling, doesn’t always mean that they are doing just fine. Thanks for your help on that front.

I would like to thank the many parents that came in this week to help us celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week. Friday was the culmination of our appreciation (no that does mean we don’t have to appreciate them for the rest of the year! J), and our parents provided a great luncheon for our staff. We really do love our teachers, and our parents showed up and out with a great meal and treats to let them know. Thank you so very much. These tokens of gratitude really do go a long way for our folks with one of the toughest jobs in the world!

Early Checkouts From School. Beginning on May 6th, the Attendance Office will not be able to accept calls for early checkouts thru the end of the year. This is due to AP, SOL, and final exam testing and staff not being able to interrupt those testing sessions. All students MUST present a note from a parent to the Attendance Office at the beginning of the day to receive a checkout pass at that time.

Just in case you haven’t heard, the first date for SOL testing will be Monday, May 6th. AS we approach this date, be sure that your student is getting plenty of rest, and if possible eating in the morning. Studies have shown that this increases the chances that your student is more focused on the task at hand and we want to give them every opportunity possible to achieve at a high level.

Well that is my bit for the week. I appreciate all of the support that we as a school continue to see from our community. Please continue to let us know if there are things that we can do better. There is always room for improvement and we are open to it. Have a great weekend, and I hope to see you soon.

Fair Oaks Prom Dress Shop

Fairfax County Public School Students Make Prom Dreams Come True

Fairfax County Public School (FCPS) marketing students from Centreville High School and the Fair Oaks Classroom on the Mall program are opening their annual Fair Oaks Prom Dress Shop on Friday, April 12th. The dress shop, which has been in business for thirteen years, has helped hundreds of financially challenged students attend prom in style each spring. Donations of stylish, high-quality, dry-cleaned prom dresses and select accessories can either be dropped off in the main office of Centreville High School between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. or at the shop in Fair Oaks Mall during the shop hours listed below.

Centreville High School Fashion Marketing students started collecting donated dresses in 2006 as a way to combine their interests in fashion with community service. They quickly came to the conclusion that students would not feel comfortable “shopping” for a dress at school. They decided that the shop should be set up in another location to give students a more authentic shopping experience, which led them to partner with the Fair Oaks Classroom on the Mall program.

The Classroom on the Mall students apply the retail marketing and visual merchandising skills learned throughout the school year to transform their classroom into the Fair Oaks Prom Dress Shop. “This is an excellent opportunity to accomplish several goals at once,” said Miranda Schick, Centreville High School and Classroom on the Mall Marketing Teacher. “First, students apply marketing lessons learned to a real-world retail environment. Second, they support the School Board’s goals of helping students succeed beyond the classroom through their ‘Portrait of a Graduate’. This includes communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and global citizenship skills.”

The Fair Oaks Prom Dress Shop is located on the upper level of Fair Oaks Mall behind the white barricade next to Build a Bear Workshop. Students from any area high school, not just Fairfax County Public School students, who are in need of a prom dress, and do not have the funds to purchase one, can come and shop from hundreds of donated dresses and accessories. They must show a valid student ID, or other form of school identification, in order to select a free dress during the following store hours:

Friday, May 3rd                                 4:00 p.m.—7:00 p.m.

Saturday, May 4th                             2:00 p.m.—5:00 p.m.
