Cardinal's Message

Cardinal's Message

Dear Cunningham Park Families and Friends,

Students and teachers came back from Spring Break rested and rejuvenated, ready for a strong finish to the school year.  Readers across multiple grade levels are learning about functional text and how it is used in our every day world.  In fourth grade, for example, students created bridges from Legos and wrote directions for someone else to re-build the same bridge step-by-step.  The creativity and thought that was put into the bridges and their directions were awesome!  In sixth grade, studies of functional text started with analysis of advertising and fliers.  Next, they moved on to investigate websites as functional text. Students were enthusiastic as they collaboratively analyzed various websites for a scavenger hunt.

This afternoon ended quite unusually with a tornado warning at around 3:00.   All students evacuated rooms with windows and moved to shelter areas within the building calmly and peacefully. The tornado drill was brief, and students returned to learning once the warning was lifted. Because of predicted incoming storms, walkers were dismissed first at the end of the day to allow maximum time possible for them to arrive home safely. That was a switch in our normal order of dismissal, so students may have arrived home a few minutes earlier than usual.

We hope to see you at our Fine Arts Festival next Tuesday, April 30, at 6:30pm!

Sincerely,

Katie Le, Principal and Jon Kemmerer, Assistant Principal

Call for Donations for the ESOL Department

Hello Cardinal Families!

Are you thinking about starting your spring cleaning?  While you clear out, think about our summer "Keep Reading" program for our beginning language learners here at Cunningham Park.

We collect gently used children's books, games, and puzzles to give out at the end of the school year.

Monetary donations are welcome as well.  Make checks payable to Cunningham Park Elementary School and write "Keep Reading" in the for line.

Drop off donations any day, just address them to Laurie Chaker. Donations are being collected through mid-May.

Thank you!

Sincerely,

Laurie Chaker, ESOL Teacher, Cunningham Park Elementary School

Literacy Is For Tomorrow (L.I.F.T.)

LIFT letters went out in last week’s Friday Folders (see copy at the bottom of this newsletter).  The deadline for returning them is Friday, May 3rd.  Please help your child reach our school-wide goal of reading at least six books over the summer.  Children will “shop” and order books in May, and then  the books are given out in June and mailed directly to your home in July and August.  Please help us reduce summer slide by keeping reading going all summer long!  If you need a lift form you can print one here.  Please contact our Reading Specialist, Kelly Carper, with any questions you  may have at kacarper@fcps.edu.

2019-2020 Class Placement Parent Input

To help with making decisions about student placements for next year, we would like input from you, our students’ parents. While we will not take requests for particular teachers, we appreciate knowing your thoughts on the types of learning environment that help your child thrive.

We value parent input. If you feel there is pertinent information to support your child’s success for the upcoming school year, email Katie Le at CPESParentInput@fcps.edu by May 10th.

Upcoming P2 Focus: Purpose

Having a clear sense of purpose in life, and a belief that you’re connected to a larger meaning, gives individuals
strength. It allows them to persevere and find courage in trying circumstances, or lead with kindness and love even when it’s not reciprocated. Those with a sense of purpose have more meaning in their life – and are more fulfilled. -Positivity Project
