Welcome back from Spring Break! This week, we will be having spirit week to celebrate the last full week of the Month of the Military Child and April is Poetry Month. On Monday, students were asked to wear green to celebrate Earth Day. On Tuesday, students will be reading selected poems. On Thursday, we will recognize our children of military families on the news show and will be having our Spring Dance. Finally, on Friday, we will PURPLE UP to once again to recognize our Military families! If you would like to chaperone the dance, please contact Mr. Fisher, school counselor. We could really use your help!
On Wednesday, April 24, we will have our Whitman Family Market. As always, our families can come by after school and pick up fresh produce and groceries. We always need volunteers to help set it up and to guide parents, students, and staff through the market. Please contact Ms. Montecinos if you can help out.
To support your planning, we have set a preliminary SOL testing calendar for the end of the year assessments. More details will be forthcoming:
May 9-10: Science 8
May 14-15: English 7
May 16-17: English 8
May 21-22: Math 7
May 23-24: Math 8/Alg 1/Geometry
May 29-30: Civics 8
Thank you for all you do to support our students and have a great week!

Whitman’s 2019 Scholastic Book Fair
We can’t wait for Whitman’s Book Fair scheduled for April 29-May 3, 2019! Students are scheduled to come through the Book Fair with their English teachers. They can also visit between 7:30 a.m.and 2:15 p.m. with a pass from their teacher to purchase books and other items. The Book Fair will be open for students and their families on Tuesday April 30 after school from 2:15-3:15 p.m.
We will have books of varying reading levels, graphic novels, books in Spanish, and other items of interest. Besides the live Book Fair in our library between April 29 and May 3, students and their families can also shop online (April 21 through May 4). The Fair will be open one weeknight, Wednesday, May 1, from 5:30-7 p.m., which coincides with our Spring Music Concert. We hope that parents, families and community members that plan to attend this concert event might also stop by our Fair to purchase books.
We have distributed Scholastic Books flyers that will go home via English classes this week. This flyer advertises just some of the titles and items that we will feature at our Book Fair.
Please check out this link http://www.scholastic.com/bf/whitmanms for other relevant information about our Book Fair. If you have questions, please contact Michelle Johnson, librarian, at mgjohnson1@fcps.edu (email) or 703-660-2447 (phone). We are looking forward to seeing our Whitman community at our Book Fair!
