Program Descriptions

Jackson “Summer Bridge” Program

Dates: July 8-July 26, 2019

Times: 8:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Location: Luther Jackson Middle School

Eligibility: Any student in 7th or 8th grade at LJMS during the 2018-19 School Year

Cost: Tuition Free! (Activity fee of $20 for Cooking and Art Elective)

NEW this summer… fight off the summer academic “slide” with this engaging new program that gives middle school students a chance to review the math and English skills they learned during the school year and also try a fun new enrichment activity in the afternoon.  7th and 8th grade students will work with current Jackson MS teachers on academics in the morning, and then choose from a selection of week-long afternoon electives like: Algebra Boot Camp, Lego STEM Lab, LJ’s Top Chef, Multicultural Art, CORE Tennis, Creative Writing, or Team Sports.  Space is limited, so register now!

 

TJ PREP CAMP

Dates: Session 1:     July 15-19, 2019

             Session 2:     July 22-26, 2019

Times: 8:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Location: Luther Jackson Middle School

Eligibility: must have completed or be enrolled in Algebra I or above and be a rising 8th grade student.

Cost: $300 (Checks and Cash accepted; made payable to Luther Jackson PTA)

TJ Prep Camp will focus on test-related mathematical and verbal reasoning, essay writing and study strategies. Students will practice skills through group work, interactive instruction, and participation in web casts. There will be 20 hours of mathematical preparation and 20 hours of verbal reasoning, essay writing and study strategies preparation. Breakfast, lunch, and transportation are provided.

 

 

HOW TO SURVIVE (and thrive in) MIDDLE SCHOOL

Dates: July 29 – August 2, 2019

Times: 8:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Location: Luther Jackson Middle School

Eligibility: rising 7th graders (Jackson MS students only)

Cost: $100

Are you a rising 7th grader who will attend Luther Jackson in the fall?  This is your chance to get this middle school thing figured out early!  Come and meet students from other elementary schools who will come together here at Jackson as 7th graders, learn your way around the building, get to know some fantastic Jackson teachers, and have a great time!  In addition to the morning HTSMS curriculum, students will get to pick from some exciting electives in the afternoon like sports, art, technology and more! **Payment information/instructions will be emailed upon completion of the online registration form.**

 

VIP CAMP (Holmes, Glasgow, Kilmer, Jackson, Thoreau, Poe)

Dates: July 1, 2017-August 1, 2019 (campers are encouraged to attend all 5 weeks)

Times: 8:00am-4:00pm

Location: Holmes Middle School

Cost: $50 plus some field trip fees

FCPS and Fairfax County Department of Neighborhood and Community Services (DNCS) have teamed up to offer a 5 week camp for rising 7th and 8th graders.  Our camp will be a combination of students from the following middle schools: Kilmer, Glasgow, Holmes, Jackson, Poe, and Thoreau.  Bus transportation will be provided from various pick-up locations which will be communicated in June prior to the start of camp. 

There is a $50 registration fee.  We will take weekly field trips and pricing information for that will be released after we have notified students of acceptance.  Students who do not attend the field trips will not need to pay the field trip fees, but will need to stay home from camp that day as all of our staff will attend the trip.  Students will also have the option of choosing which trips to attend. 

The staff is led by your local After-School Specialists and trained DNCS staff.   Campers will have a great time playing sports, games, doing arts and crafts and exploring concepts in science and technology.

Registration:  Begins on Monday, April 8th, and will close on Friday, April 26th.  All registration fees are due by Friday, April 19th.  Non-paid registrations will be removed from the list and placed on our waitlist at that time.  You can expect to receive notice of acceptance or waitlist status soon after registration closes in April. 

 

JAGUAR JUMPSTART

Dates: July 30 – August 1, 2019

Times: 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Location: Falls Church High School

Eligibility: rising 9th graders

Cost: $10

Are you going to Falls Church High School next year?! This is your opportunity to get a jump-start on what it means to go to high school. Come and get to know the school and some teachers and hang out with other students who will also be joining the Jaguar community this August. There is lots of fun to be had and great opportunities to get ahead of the game and feel prepared for your first few days of high school.
