WANT TO LEARN HOW TO SEND YOUR KIDS TO COLLEGE WITHOUT GOING BROKE?

The PTA is proud to sponsor this workshop!  For many families, the high cost of higher education is a daunting proposition. Parents lie awake at night trying to figure out how to afford sending their children to college and still have enough of their hard earned money to be able to retire. Some families have children attending college next year and others have years to plan; but the fears of tackling these monumental and rising costs are the same. The College Funding Coach® is here to help families figure out HOW to pay for it! Please join us on May 1st at 6:30PM for the Little-Known Secrets of Paying for College workshop. This is information you can’t afford to miss! To RSVP please: Click Here or visit our website, www.thecollegefundingcoach.org  and look for upcoming classes in your area.  Please see the flyer below for additional details.

HAVE A SAFE, HAPPY AND WONDERFUL SPRING BREAK!

OHS Dance Team 2019-20 Tryouts

If you love to dance and want to be involved in your school, come tryout for the Oakton High School Dance Team!  Tryouts will be held April 22-25 and April 29-May 2, 2019 for the 2019-20 team selection.  Not sure if you have all of the skills for dance team??  Come to tryouts anyway!  You will have the opportunity to learn skills there, and dancers are often selected based on potential ability to pick up the needed skills!  Go to http://oaktonathletics.org (go to Fall >Dance >Varsity) for a Tryout Packet.

OHS Sports Health Screening and Pre-Participation Physical Event

To participate in sports next school year, your child must have a physical on file dated on or after May 1, 2019, on the new form (Revised February 2017).  This includes working out in the weight room, conditioning, “green days” and try outs.

The Oakton High School Athletic Training Program is offering an opportunity for students to receive a sports health screening and pre-participation physical (PPE) on Monday May 13, 2019 from 5:30-8 pm.  Our team physicians, as well as a staff of nurses, physical therapists and certified athletic trainers will be on hand to provide a thorough screening.  If during the screening or physical, the physicians find something that is questionable to them regarding your child’s health, they may request further evaluation by another physician. We are asking for a minimum donation of $50 in exchange for the PPE.  Registration is now open yet.  To register for a PPE, go to: https://www.fcps.edu/athletic.preparticipation.screenings and follow the links for sports physicals.  There is also a link for the new form there as well.  Walk-ins are also welcome on that evening but we ask for a $60 donation at that time. This physical is good for the entire following school year.

This is the Athletic Training Program’s method of fund raising.  All the funds for equipment and supplies are raised at this event.  The county provides no funding for any of the supplies or equipment in the athletic training room that is used to take care of our athletes.  Your support would be greatly appreciated.  You too benefit from this process.  Once your child’s VHSL physical form is completed that night, it stays on file at the school, as well as a digital copy is kept on our server, so if you need a copy just email one of the ATCs and we can sent you a copy.

PPE’s are being offered in the same format at every high school in FCPS and are fund raising efforts at those schools as well.  If you can not attend the PPEs at Oakton H.S., there may be another local high school offering the opportunity on a date that may be more convenient for you.  If you have any questions or concerns, contact Paul Rupp, MS, ATC at prupp@fcps.edu

  • If a student has lost his/her charger, they need to bring $38 to the front office to purchase a new charger.
  • If the student computer needs to be fixed, please bring it to the Help Desk as soon as possible to ensure it gets returned in time for SOL testing.

Standards of Learning Test Schedules for Students Observing Ramadan

This year, the main Standards of Learning (SOL) testing window has significant overlaps with Ramadan, the Muslim holy month marked by daily fasting. The SOL testing window begins for high schools on Monday, April 29, and for elementary and middle schools on Monday, May 6. All schools must complete SOL make-up tests and retakes by Friday, June 7. Ramadan begins the evening of Sunday, May 5, and ends with Eid-al-Fitr on Wednesday, June 5.

FCPS welcomes and encourages engagement with parents and guardians of students affected by this overlap. School staff will work with parents and guardians to make schedule adjustments or determine how best to address students’ needs. For example, it may be possible to schedule testing early in the day when energy levels are likely to be highest.

If you have a child in an SOL grade-level who will be fasting to observe Ramadan this year, contact Lea Fadden, School Test Coordinator, at Lea.Fadden@fcps.edu to take advantage of possible scheduling options.

How much screen time? That is a question all parents are asking as technology and mobile technology continues to saturate our society.  We have all heard that Silicon Valley executives are not allowing their children to use screens. The article “How much screen time? Silicon Valley parents are still trying to figure it out” by Ana Homayoun of the Washington Post, dives into this topic and shreds some light on the issue and provides resources and tips as a parent.

Screen time at school is also a concern for Teachers and Administrators.  I wanted to let you, the parents, know that devices at school are not used continuously all day.  There's a mix of screen time and non-screen time in each class. The time on the devices is more about student creation and engaging students to explore the curriculum they are learning.  They also use the devices to engage in class discussions and collaborative work.
