Dear CES,

Happy Spring Break! I hope you take time to relax and rejuvenate through  travel, local activities, and/or quality family time. I would love to see pictures of all the fun our community is having over the next week. If you have time, please e-mail me a picture with a short description of your adventures. I will create a PowerPoint and share it on our bus lobby display screen.

On Wednesday, our staff showed their support of military families by wearing purple to school (above picture). We are proud to have many military families in the CES community. Thank you to all of them for all of their service, sacrifice, and support.

Get to know the Staff of CES!

This week we will learn more about our specialists team. Please click HERE to see their brilliant videos.

This past week our students focused on:

BEING PRESENT AND GIVING OTHERS MY ATTENTION

A deliberate focus on being present is so important today due to the increasing number of distractions vying for our time and attention. Phone calls, text messages, emails, social media notifications all have the formidable capacity to pull us away from the present moment and what’s most important – our relationships with other people. How dangerous is this to our well-being and the fabric of our society? Very.

Dr. Jean Twenge, the author of iGen: Why Today's Super-Connected Kids Are Growing Up Less Rebellious, More Tolerant, Less Happy--and Completely Unprepared for Adulthood--and What That Means for the Rest of Us, cites research that should scare us about people born between 1995 and 2012. As she explains, “Rates of teen depression and suicide have skyrocketed since 2011. It’s not an exaggeration to describe iGen as being on the brink of the worst mental-health crisis in decades. Much of this deterioration can be traced to their phones.” But this isn’t just about kids. Adults, too, are addicted to devices and social media – and are being negatively impacted mentally, emotionally, and physically by these addictions.

Positivity Project Reflections

Here are some conversation starters that will encourage your child to share what they’ve learned and talk about it with your family.

1. What does it mean to be present? What does it look like and sound like?
2. How can you be present in someone else’s life?
3. Can you think of someone who has been present in your life and has made a difference in your life?
4. Why is it important to be an active listener? How does it feel when people don’t listen to you?
