Fairfax High School's Club Council - getting things done!
Dear Family Fairfax,
HAPPY FRIDAY! The buzz is in the air, students and staff are smiling, and we are all ready for some time with our family and loved ones. I firmly believe education is the greatest of professions: We get to be with kids every single day. For me, I have gotten to watch so many of them grow alongside you, and for that, I am thankful.
I had two opportunities to engage with parents this week: One at the City of Fairfax School Board meeting and the other at the monthly parent-principal coffee. At the city meeting, I was proud to hear that these weekly messages are helpful to many in our community, but questions arose about the differences between the City of Fairfax School Board and the Fairfax County School Board. For your own learning and if you are interested, here is a link that might answer any questions you have. With it being the Friday before our long break, my coffee was not as well attended as I might have hoped it would be, but it was great to have a more intimate conversation with a couple of our parents. I do want to remind you that our offices will be closed over the spring break holiday.
Yesterday evening, I attended our Automotive Technology Advisory Council. I know we have featured this program before, but I remain in awe of the graduates who come back in support to share their stories. The two young men who attended yesterday are recent graduates, already in the workforce, with the direction, drive, passion, confidence and skills to make their dreams a reality. It is what we hope for all of our graduates, and it is so inspiring to see and hear it as a reality. So many in our community came out in support of our annual Career Talks today. Our 10th grade students participated in sessions of their choice to learn from various professionals. We are so appreciative of all the support from the many volunteers today. I know that I am like a broken record when I say that it takes the love and care of all of us to be all that we need to be for our students. Thank you to the many parents and community members who consistently make Fairfax High School the great school it is.

SOL Schedule Posted
The 2019 Spring Testing Calendar has been posted to the FHS website. Students and Parents may access the calendar at: https://fairfaxhs.fcps.edu/announcements/2019-end-year-exam-schedule . Students are reminded to get a good night’s rest the night before a test and to eat a healthy breakfast. Please try to refrain from making appointments on the day of the test. Once a student has begun testing, he or she cannot leave until the test is complete.
SOL Scheduling Considerations for Ramadan
The Spring SOL Testing Window and the observance of Ramadan will overlap in May/June 2018. Spring SOL testing will be conducted at FHS between April 30th and June 6th. Teachers will be providing the date, time, and location for each SOL after spring break. If your student is scheduled for an afternoon SOL and will not do well at that time due to fasting, please contact Kathy Kraus-Zadrozny, Assessment Coach at kjkrauszadro@fcps.edu or 703-219-2216 to schedule a morning SOL test for your student. Students may also reach Mrs. KZ in L127 at school.
AP PROCTORS NEEDED: We need your help in helping proctor Advanced Placement (AP) tests between May 6-17. Please sign up for a time slot via the following link: (https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0f4facae29a3fc1-2019 ). No experience is necessary. You may not proctor a test that your student is taking. Contact assessment coach Kathy Kraus-Zadrozny at kjkrauszadro@fcps.edu with any questions.

Congratulations to Emily Sarber on placing 1st in the state FCCLA competition last weekend in Virginia Beach. Emily will move on to represent Virginia in the national competition in Anaheim, California.
This past weekend over 500 students came from all over the state to compete in the FBLA State Competitions. Congratulations goes out to Sam Slaymaker for earning 3rd place in the entire state for Economics.
Congratulations to Greg Kobayashi for earning 2nd in Agribusiness.
Looking back over the FBLA records, Fairfax has not had this many students place in both regionals and state competitions. With Sam being a Junior – we are looking forward to seeing him shine some more next year.
Both young men will be headed to the National Competition in June in San Antonio. If you see them in the halls – give them a high five.
 EVENING TEA - Jena Bae
Congratulations to Jena Bae on being chosen as a first-place regional winner by the Virginia School Boards Association. Her entry above is done in color pencil and is amazing. The entries of first place regional winners will be framed and be displayed in the VSBA offices in Charlottesville and in the Richmond office of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction. All pictures will be exhibited at the Annual Convention in Williamsburg on November 20-22, 2019.
 2019 SENIOR TRACK ATHLETES
Following a great home track meet, the track and field team competed once again on Saturday in the PR Northern Virginia Invitational at Robinson High School. Forty high school teams were represented.
Highlights included Allie Lawson winning the silver medal in 100 meter hurdles and 200 meter dash. She also won the 300 meter hurdles race. Kyla Curlee got 4th in the discus throw, and 8th in the shot put.
On the boys side, Marcus Dropik got 8th place in the 400 meter dash, and 6th place in the high jump. The 4x100 meter relay team placed 7th overall, and the 4x400 meter relay team won the bronze medal. Marc Agossou won the bronze medal in the triple jump. Bobby Kestyn won the silver medal in the discus throw, and won the gold medal in the shot put. His shot put performance broke the school record.
 The Crew team is off to a great start under the leadership of head coach, Gabe Colmenarez Fuentes, and his entire coaching staff. At the Walter Mess Regatta, the Men's Novice 4 finished in 1st place, the Men's 2nd Varsity finished in 2nd place, the Women's Junior 4 finished in 3rd place, and the Men's 1st Varsity 4 finished in 4th place.  Fairfax Academy Fashion Careers Instructor, Jin-A Chang, begins her lesson by demonstrating how to pin and cut fabric as they work on their pattern-making unit.
 FHS students were invited to perform at the Eleanor Roosevelt High School (in Maryland) Korean Club’s annual show celebrating Korea.
 Fairfax Academy Fashion Careers Presents Fashion in Motion
Students from Fairfax Academy Fashion Careers representing 18 different FCPS schools will be showcasing their personal collections and wearable arts in the 7th annual Fashion in Motion Fashion Show on Friday, April 26th at 7:30pm at the Stacy C. Sherwood Center, 3740 Old Lee Highway, in Fairfax.
This year we are excited to welcome Maribeth Luftglass, the Assistant Superintendent of the FCPS Department of Information Technology, to ‘kick-off’ the fashion show.
All garments are entirely student-created; from concept to design, to patternmaking and construction. The fashion design students have been working all year for this event and the opportunity to showcase their talents, dedication, and hard work.
Doors open at 7pm with the show starting at 7:30pm. Tickets are $15 and only available online www.FashionInMotion.TicketLeap.com/2019. Order immediately, as seats/tickets are limited.

 Fairfax Academy for Communication and the Arts - MCT Fest
This year will mark the 14th year of MCT Fest at Fairfax Academy for Communication and the Arts. The event is part of Spotlight on the Arts in the City of Fairfax, and will start at 6:30pm on Saturday, April 27th at the Sherwood Center in Fairfax. Parking is free, tickets will be sold at the door for $15, and dinner concessions will be available for purchase.
MCT Fest is comprised and coordinated by students from the Academy’s Music & Computer Technology (MCT) level 1 & 2 classes, which includes 50 students from over 20 schools within FCPS.
MCT Fest consists of all original music written by MCT students. A total of 15 student acts will demonstrate their love for a wide variety of music by performing rock, jazz, rap, classical, pop, acoustic/ folk, and numerous other genres.
This event is student managed, and they have been planning, organizing, promoting, and practicing for this event throughout this school year. The performers’ preparation included auditions in front of a panel of second year MCT students to ensure that they are prepared to perform at an event of this level.
In addition to ticket sales, you may support the MCT classes by making a donation or by purchasing homemade chili, or other food/drink items while at the event. Proceeds go directly back into the MCT classroom to purchase items needed for its operation (which includes keyboards, MIDI devices, microphones, cables, software upgrades, etc.).

 Once Upon a Twisted Tale
 Are you looking for something that will help your child excel in school? Are they interested in exploring a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) oriented career? If so, consider participating in Lanier Middle School’s new Robotics Team! The FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) is a branch of FIRST (For the Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), an international organization dedicated to the STEM-based growth of younger students. FTC is a robotics program for middle and high school students looking to explore STEM careers. Through participation in the program, FTC students can learn many technical and non-technical skills, including programming, engineering, 3D CAD, marketing, as well as many fundamental life skills such as teamwork, collaboration, creativity, and innovation.
