WANT TO LEARN HOW TO SEND YOUR KIDS TO COLLEGE WITHOUT GOING BROKE?

The PTA is proud to sponsor this workshop!  For many families, the high cost of higher education is a daunting proposition. Parents lie awake at night trying to figure out how to afford sending their children to college and still have enough of their hard earned money to be able to retire. Some families have children attending college next year and others have years to plan; but the fears of tackling these monumental and rising costs are the same. The College Funding Coach® is here to help families figure out HOW to pay for it! Please join us on May 1st at 6:30PM for the Little-Known Secrets of Paying for College workshop. This is information you can’t afford to miss! To RSVP please: Click Here or visit our website, www.thecollegefundingcoach.org  and look for upcoming classes in your area.  Please see the flyer below for additional details.

ART SHOW

April is the Month of the Military Child

Each year our nation designates April as the Month of the Military Child to recognize and thank children from military families for the sacrifices they make living the military lifestyle.  The recognition is part of the legacy of former Defense Secretary Casper Weinberger who established the commemoration in 1986.   During the month, one day is selected as the day to “Purple Up! For Military Kids” and all are encouraged to wear purple in recognition of the strength and sacrifices of military connected youth (MCY).  Why purple?  Purple is the color that symbolizes all branches of the military, as it is the combination of Army green, Coast Guard blue, Air Force blue, Marine red, and Navy blue.  This year Purple Up day will be celebrated on April 10.

Military connected youth face unique circumstances living the military lifestyle.  By understanding the lifestyle of military connected youth we can better meet their needs as they transition with their family members who serve our nation. Currently over 11,000 military connected youth call FCPS home.

Celebrating the Month of the Military Child provides a powerful opportunity to raise awareness and build support to help these children meet the unique challenges they face! It is an opportunity to recognize and thank military children and youth for their heroism, character, courage, sacrifices and continued resilience.

Celebration Highlights:

NJHS Members- Service Hours Reminder

Thank you for continuing to run the NJHS announcement.  Can we modify it for this week?

NJHS Students and Parents

In order to maintain status as an NJHS member, students are required to

  • Complete 15 service hours in service of an FCPS school (separate from and in addition to Civics Service Learning Hours)
  • Maintain a 3.5 cumulative GPA
  • Uphold the Pillars of NJHS

Today students that currently are not in compliance with one or more of those categories have received a letter detailing what they need to complete to maintain their member status.  This in no way removes students from NJHS at this time.  However, changes will need to be made in order for them to attend our pinning ceremony in May.  Final GPA calculations will be done at the end of the 3rd quarter (April 4, 2019) and service hours are due April 30, 2019 (service hour calculations in the letter were correct as of 2:30 pm on Wednesday 3/6) .

Parents of 8th grade NJHS members- please ask your students if they received a letter during Learning Seminar today so you can be aware of their membership status.  If you have any questions you can reach out to Molly Bridenbaugh (NJHS Faculty Co-Advisor) at mbridenbaugh@fcps.edu

  • If a student has lost his/her charger, they need to bring $38 to the front office to purchase a new charger.

Standards of Learning Test Schedules for Students Observing Ramadan

This year, the main Standards of Learning (SOL) testing window has significant overlaps with Ramadan, the Muslim holy month marked by daily fasting. The SOL testing window begins for high schools on Monday, April 29, and for elementary and middle schools on Monday, May 6. All schools must complete SOL make-up tests and retakes by Friday, June 7. Ramadan begins the evening of Sunday, May 5, and ends with Eid-al-Fitr on Wednesday, June 5.

FCPS welcomes and encourages engagement with parents and guardians of students affected by this overlap. School staff will work with parents and guardians to make schedule adjustments or determine how best to address students’ needs. For example, it may be possible to schedule testing early in the day when energy levels are likely to be highest.

If you have a child in an SOL grade-level who will be fasting to observe Ramadan this year, contact Lea Fadden, School Test Coordinator, at Lea.Fadden@fcps.edu to take advantage of possible scheduling options.
