Happy Thursday Wolverine Community!

A gentle reminder---No School Tomorrow and it is the end of the quarter.  Students and teachers have been working hard to close out the quarter on a strong,  positive note, so if your students wants to sleep in tomorrow they do need a break and some rest. 😊.

April is the Month of the Military Child.  Please check out the FCPS site on resources to support our military families and students https://www.fcps.edu/registration/military-families .  We are so fortunate to have 85 families, roughly 3%  of our school as military connected youth. On today, April 4th, the School Board will recognize our military students and their families at the School Board meeting beginning at 7 pm at Luther Jackson MS.  If you are able to attend, military students and families will be recognized, and have their picture taken with Dr. Brabrand and our School Board.

Celebrate Assistant Principals Week this April 8–12! West Potomac has the hardest working, most committed APs in the district!  Please send them a note of thanks and appreciation if you have a moment next week.

Thank you to our small but mighty WP Athletics Booster and our coaches, athletes and parents for a hugely successful Mulch Sale.  Over $13,000 was raised to support our amazing athletic programs!

As always, please have a great weekend and reenergize for 4th quarter to end the school year #westpostrong!

Ms. Millard

Attendance Reminders – please reference the Attendance “Quick Guide” on the website

https://westpotomachs.fcps.edu/announcements/attendance-update

Checking in Tardy:

Please notify the attendance office if your student will be late by either calling the attendance line, sending an email or sending a note with your student.  Please include the student’s name, student ID # and reason for the tardy.  Students must check in at the Attendance Office regardless of the time they arrive at school (even if between classes).  The student’s attendance record will be updated to “excused” when they arrive at school not when the message or email is sent.  For example, if you call or email at 7am but your student does not check in until 11a.m., their attendance will not be updated until they check in at the Attendance  Office to receive their blue tardy pass.

Checking Out Early:

If your student does not check out properly per the policy and the student leaves campus, it may result in a class cut and considered a disciplinary matter. Phone calls/emails or notes after the fact to excuse the absence on an unauthorized check out will be followed up by your student’s administrator.   If the case of an emergency, the student can always come to the attendance office and we can try to contact the parent.  If a student becomes ill during the school day, they can get a pass to go to the clinic.

While we recognize it is not always possible to send a note phone call or email in advanced, last minute phone calls and emails may not get processed in a timely manner and may result in a student not being able to be contacted for the early dismissal. please help us by keeping phone calls or emails for last minute early releases to a minimum.

Thank you,

The Attendance Office

AP students who wish to leave immediately after a morning AP exam, or come-in late for an afternoon AP exam, must submit an AP pre-arranged absence form to their Alpha-Administrator, no later than April 26.  Pre-arranged students will be able to leave campus immediately after the exam, instead of going to the attendance office to “check-out”.  Students who test in the afternoon, will be able to go directly to their test site as opposed to having to “check-in” at attendance. AP Testing Volunteers

AP Testing is quickly approaching. In addition to the counselors, who act as lead proctors, the Student Services department needs PARENT VOLUNTEERS to serve as proctors for the duration of each AP test. Your support is essential to our test security and ability to implement a successful program.

Please review the AP Testing Schedule and consider signing-up via the PTSA volunteer web-page. Except for Comparative Government, all exams will be held in the Main Gym. Please note: You may not proctor your own child during an exam. Please feel free to contact Adriana Meeks, the AP Testing Coordinator with any comments, questions or concerns. Thank you for your continuous support.

PTSA Update

We need a Corresponding Secretary for the 2019-20 PTSA Board. The vote will take place at the May 6 meeting.

We need a volunteer to fill the Corresponding Secretary position for the PTSA Board next year. This position can be mostly done at your home or other place of convivence. Duties include:

  • Gather information for the weekly News You Choose.
  • Send out announcements, calendar events via PTBoard communication.
  • Handle incoming and outgoing correspondence and other items as delegated.
  • Provide advance notice to members of regular and special general membership meetings.
  • Notify the executive committee in advance of its meeting.

Junior Parent Volunteer Needed for Baccalaureate, June 2.

We need the parent of a current Junior student to help with organizing the Baccalaureate Ceremony, June 2nd. This parent will observe and learn the ropes from the current Senior-parent organizers, with the intent to lead Baccalaureate ceremony planning next year. They are mainly in charge of setting up and collecting food for the reception at 2:00, June 2.

The Baccalaureate is a one-hour interdenomination service honoring the graduating Senior class. We rely on parent involvement to continue this tradition. Please reply to Julia MacDonald if you're interested.

Princess For a Night Boutique Opens This Saturday, April 6!

The Princess For a Night (PFN) committee urgently needs your help at our dress giveaway free “shopping” days – Saturday, April 6 and Monday, April 8. Please come see how rewarding it can be to help students find prom dresses and accessories, and outfits to prepare them for job interviews, college functions and other events. We need about six to 10 people (during each of three shifts) to make this a positive experience for the students.

Sign up here to join the fun. Please contact Christy for information about volunteer shifts and other needs.

PFN collects donated prom dresses and accessories for West Potomac and other area high school students to make Prom more affordable and also offers young women less formal dresses and outfits suitable for many other occasions.

All students are welcome to visit the PFN Pop-up Boutique at West Potomac in the Girls Team Locker Room (Gunston building, Room 111) on our two free “shopping” dates: this Saturday, April 6, 10 am - 3 pm and Monday, April 8, 3-5 pm (late bus day). Please help us publicize the event so we get a great turnout by sharing the flyer linked below with your student(s) and other interested young women, on social media if you like.
