Dear CES,

Next week we will start our new student absence letters. If you look at the image to the right, it illustrates a pretty amazing stat. Students who miss 2 days of school each month (18 days total) are less likely to graduate from high school. Our new proactive approach will include a letter sent home when your student misses more than 10% of the school year. Please know that these letters are not a judgement, but as information to share. Our goal is to work with and support our families to create a plan that will increase student attendance. If you have any questions regarding the letters, please feel free to contact us.

Get to know the Staff of CES!

This week we will learn more about the administration team. Please click HERE to see our videos.

ADVANCED ACADEMIC PROGRAMS (AAP) SCREENING FOR SCHOOL-BASED (LEVEL II-III) SERVICES

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in grades K-8.  Learning experiences are designed to develop higher-level thinking through enrichment, acceleration, and extensions of the Program of Studies (POS).  Teachers, administrators, and advanced academic resource teachers (AARTs) work together to provide the levels of  school-based services at CES.

Screening at Centreville is done schoolwide in spring to determine services for the next school year.  Parents do not need to take any action as all children in grades K-5 will be screened automatically. Multiple criteria are used to screen students for all levels of AAP services.  Parents or guardians whose children are found newly eligible for Level III services for grades 3-6 will be notified by Centreville in June.

If you have any questions, please contact Kim House, Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, at kahouse@fcps.edu.

This past week our students focused on:

HUMOR

Humor means that you like to laugh and bring smiles to other people. It is a sense of playfulness and lightness. A way of looking at and describing the world that brings laughter to people. A person with the strength of humor is skilled at seeing at the funny side of things, bringing smiles and laughter to others, and identifying and communicating the absurdities in life. People with this strength don’t specifically need to be joke tellers, although many are.

Humor can have a dark side, depending on how it’s used. Some humor is mean spirited and bullying. The strength of humor that the character strength focuses on is that which raises the spirits of other people.

Positivity Project Reflections

Here are some conversation starters that will encourage your child to share what they’ve learned and talk about it with your family.

1. What kinds of things can laughter help with?
2. Why is humor important?
3. Have you ever attempted to make people laugh? What strengths have you used to do this?
4. Are there certain times/places where it’s important to control humor?
