MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Full-day absences, whether excused or unexcused, impact our accreditation in the same manner. Chronic absenteeism is defined as a student missing 10% or more full days of school during a school year.  For a school year, this equals 18 full-day absences. To maintain our accreditation in attendance, no more than 15% of our students can miss 18 or more full-days of school. In the 2017-2018 school year, 14.5% of our students had 18 or more full day absences. As of March 29, 11.7% of our students have been chronically absent.

Please be mindful of the importance of regular school attendance when planning trips or excusing your student from school. Chronic absenteeism can increase anxiety and stress for many students and has an adverse effect on academic achievement. Help us support your student in reaching his/her academic goals. Contact your student’s counselor or administrator if you have questions about your student’s attendance.

Thursday, April 4 is the end of the 3rd quarter. If you have not already done so, be sure to check ParentVue or your student’s StudentVue to monitor his/her current grades.

From April 1 – 5, while our region leaders are at a conference, I will be filling in at the Region 5 office, which oversees the Chantilly, Fairfax, Westfield, and Woodson Pyramids. During my absence, Scott Davies, sub school 2 principal, will serve as acting principal.

As always, thank you for your support.

Anthony E. Copeland, PhD

Principal

News and Information

Congratulations to the Westfield Science Olympiad Team. The results for our team were as follows:

  • Westfield placed 11th of 41 schools
  • Westfield placed 4th in Experimental Design - In this event, students design an experiment to answer a question they have not seen in advance, write the whole procedure, collect data for the experiment, and analyze the data with proper graphs, calculations, and error analysis.
  • Sounds of Music. For this event, students build a musical instrument from scratch that is properly tuned and has good volume and tone. They also take a written test that shows their understanding of the principles of sound. Jessica H and Alexis P built a fully functional violin and violin bow! They have medaled in this event in every tournament they competed this year. It was truly an amazing engineering feat for two sophomores.
