CHS Blood Drive

We are so happy to report that our staff and students donated a total of 230 units of blood in our blood drive last week, which is enough to save 690 lives. We were able to far surpass our goal of 206 total units.

Thank you so much for your continue support of our HOSA students for organizing the blood drive!  We are extremely proud of all of our students and this achievement!!!!

Recognitions

Chantilly Band

Symphonic Band performed with great energy on a particularly challenging grade V program, earning EXCELLENT ratings from all adjudicators.

Symphonic Winds created some stunning musical moments on a stylistically diverse grade VI program, earning SUPERIOR ratings from all adjudicators.

Symphonic Winds' Superior rating coupled with our Mighty Marching Chargers' Superior rating at the State Marching Band Assessment this fall means that the Chantilly Band will be recognized as a VIRGINIA HONOR BAND for the 3rd year in a row and the 15th time in school history!  This achievement is a product of the incredible hard work, dedication, and perseverance demonstrated by all band students year round.

Chantilly Robotics

FRC 612 had another great tournament.  They were the team leader of the winning alliance and are currently ranked first in the Chesapeake District (129 teams).   In addition, they won the Gracious Professionalism Award for helping other teams repair their robots.   They have qualified for Regional Championship which will take place April 11-13 at George Mason University where they are hoping to qualify for the World Championships.  We would love to see you there!

Yearbook

Congratulations to the Odyssey yearbook staff and Ms. Mary Kay Downes, adviser, who won the 2019 Silver Crown Award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.

Recent Student Successes

This is the next installment for the school year of what has become a weekly segment aimed at recognizing students for demonstrating recent improvement or achievement in academics, behavior or citizenship. At the end of each recognition, you will see the name of the nominating teacher or staff member. On a rotating basis, departments will nominate students.  I meet with recognized students each week to congratulate them in person.

I observed Cristian Araniva Lopez and Gabriel Franco Galeano assisting a custodian set up lunch tables in the morning before school. They were waiting for breakfast, early enough that they were the only ones in the cafeteria. When the custodian began setting up the tables, Cristian and Gabe put their phones down and got up to help. They took a 20-30 minute job (presumably) for the custodian down to a 5-7 minute job for the three of them; at least 30 tables. This is an example of character success and something that should be more commonplace. I was happy to see our students doing the right thing. Mr. Philippe Brady

Ariel Chien will be going to the All-State Orchestra for the first time as the third highest ranked violist in the state! Mr. Aaron Mynes

Christopher Cognetta is a leader and is compassionate in helping all students to succeed in PE. Christopher is the first student to step up to a new assignment with positive energy and reaches out to the students that are struggling, to help them. Mr. Frank Hamby

Brianna Fujiwara has grown to become a strong musical leader and example in our Concert Band. She took on extra responsibility in our last concert when we rewrote one of the melodies for her to play as a solo. She handled this role with great success and was even complimented by one of our judges for her wonderful playing! Mr. Doug Maloney

Colin McLean is an extremely self-motivated and helpful student. He is a leader in his section of Concert Choir, and is eager to help out the Choral Department as a whole. Mr. Evan Ayars

Sazane Qeriqi has always presented characters with energy and enthusiasm, but she continues to grow as a performer and add depth and dimension. Her recent performance of a Shakespeare sonnet had nuance and subtle characterization that show tremendous growth and achievement. Her continued development as a performer has been amazing to watch. Mr. Andy Shaw

Emma Wymer has been very successful this month in PE. Great job Emma! Ms. Bonnie O’Hearn
