From the Principal

Family,

This week we got to recognize a number of students for their efforts in the arts and sciences. Our students showed very well din these two areas. Our students won a number of awards at the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards Contest. I wanted to mention two students in particular for their accomplishments. Sam Evans won in the area of Art Portfolio and Sarah Kim won in the area of Mixed Media. Both of these students won Silver Medals at the National Level! Only one other national medal was awarded in the entire county! With these awards, our scholarship monies offered to students now exceeds one million dollars!! This is the most amount of money offered to a graduating class to date exceeding $968,000 in 2013. We also had a number of students at the Regional Science Fair who were recognized for their outstanding efforts they put into their experiments. I continue to encounter students with so many talents in our building, and I am blown away with each and every experience.

Speaking of talented students, I had the pleasure of attending the South County Pyramid Band Concert this week. Along with a packed house of like jazz lovers, I witnessed the exceptional talent of our high school students, as well as what will likely be a bright future in our music department from the middle school and elementary school students. The music was great, but I was so inspired by the talent and courage of the many soloists Thursday night. I am very excited about what is to come.

When I arrived at South County, I made a decision to “audit” the department chair positions to ensure the alignment with the vision I was bringing to the building. Because of this decision, we have been able to have some very important and valuable conversations throughout the building. The administrative team has in some cases been able to offer leadership opportunities to other teachers in the building, thus expanding the capacity for leadership. Our current department chairs have been able to reflect and provide perspective on our direction and will serve as outstanding mentors and an active support for our new chairs.

If you had not been following my tweets from this week, you missed out on the celebration we were engaged in during International Week. Mrs. Vera Woodson, one of our talented Marketing teachers, decided to put into motion a call to action by some of her students to celebrate the many cultures in our building (this put a huge grin on my face when I heard about this). Teachers and students participated as we recognized some of the wonderful attributes and customs from all over the world. This was capped this week with our annual International Night Celebration Friday evening. Students and families shared a taste from their cultures, strutted across the stage in a fashion show from around the world, and then entertained us with cultural dance. Again, so much culture, talent, and pride in our building. And what was so impressive and inspiring, was the support from the students’ peers as they performed throughout the show. I was amazed, and so proud to have been able to share in this experience. Thank you all for assisting in providing a glimpse into the beautiful future we could have if we all truly embrace #OneStallion. I want to thank Mrs. Jenelle Fernandez for sponsoring the International Club, and for helping her students to put on this great display of unity.

Well that is all for this week. Thank you once again for this opportunity to serve and to work with your children. Have a great weekend. #OneStallion
