MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Today, I read the following message to our students prior to the end of the school day.  I shared similar information with parents at our March PTSA meeting.  Please have a discussion with your student about the danger of vapes, juuls, and e-cigarettes to his/her health.

“Students and Staff: In the past few weeks, school staff has seen a significant increase in the number of vaping incidents. We have received information about several instances of students vaping in the bathrooms, hallways, classrooms or being in possession of vape products. The use, possession or distribution of vapes, juuls, and/or the use of e-cigarettes is illegal for teens and a violation of the Student Rights & Responsibilities; furthermore, it is not a healthy practice.  We are aware that some cartridges contain THC oil.  This is particularly concerning given its potential effect on those who use it.  Students who use, possess, or distribute vaping products on school grounds will receive consequences, which may include a referral to the Hearings Office.

The presence of illegal drugs on school grounds presents a significant danger to our school and goes against our efforts to maintain a safe and health learning environment. We ask that you take care of yourselves and one another.  In the coming weeks, we will continue to engage in discussions on the dangers of vaping and other drug use.  As always if you need help please seek the support and counsel of a trusted adult, and report any concerns to a teacher, counselor, or member of the security/administrative team.

We know the use of these products does not represent the overwhelming majority of our student body.  We care about you and your health, and we want to ensure we have a safe and secure learning environment.  Please help us keep Westfield a great place to learn and work.

GO BULLDOGS!”

Sincerely,

Anthony E. Copeland, PhD
