School Superintendent, Dr. Brabrand, talks with a group of students about our Play Space PBL on the school's playground.

Dear Cunningham Park Families and Friends,

What a busy week here, in Cardinal Nation! We were treated with spring-like weather towards the end of the week, and our students enjoyed as much fresh air as possible.  Back inside classrooms, great things are happening daily!

Vienna police officers visited Head Start and kindergarten classes on Wedensday.  They showed students their tools, uniform, and even allowed them to see the police vehicle.  It was great to learn about our community helpers.

In third grade, a writers' celebration was the culmination of a six week content area research project.  During the celebration, students displayed the results of their findings using nonfiction literary techniques.  We have quite some authors on our hands!

Friday, Superintendent of Fairfax County Public Schools, Dr. Brabrand, visited Cunningham Park as a part of his Friday visits to schools series.  He toured the school and met with a group of students, to learn about our Play Space PBL (pictured).  Dr. Brabrand was so impressed with our students' poise, knowledge, and grit, he offered to share their ideas with the FCPS Leadership Team.

As always, our students represented Cunningham Park with pride, and they remind us the future is bright in their hands!

Sincerely,

Katie Le, Principal and Jon Kemmerer, Assistant Principal

Using technology, students propose adding a mini zipline to our playground for Superintendent Brabrand.

Second graders learn to use new strategy games purchased by the CPES PTA.

New Strategy Games Roll Out in Classrooms!

Thanks to the generous support of our PTA, boxes of strategy games are being rolled out in classrooms by our Advanced Academics Resource Teacher, Mr. Solsberry, together with classroom teachers. When students learn to think strategically while playing, higher order thinking strategies become second nature and directly benefit learning.  We are thrilled to have these new games in our classrooms!

Thank You CPES PTA!!

When students develop higher order thinking skills through play, those skills become second nature.

SOL Assessment Schedule

For your planning purposes, below is the testing schedule for SOLs this spring.  All assessments begin at the start of the school day and are untimed, so students may take as much time in one day as they need.  It is helpful to avoid scheduling outside appointments for students on an assessment day.

Upcoming P2 Focus: Forgiveness

Forgiveness is the ability to move past being injured, and to allow yourself to reconcile with the person who hurt you. Forgiveness can often be seen as a selfless act, but it also carries many benefits for those who practice it. Those who demonstrate forgiveness have the ability to move forward after someone has caused them pain. Forgiveness is often rooted in the idea that all people are valuable and worthy of a second chance. Many who forgive have the ability to consider things from another’s perspective. -Positivity Project
