Science Olympiad 1st place at regionals

SCIENCE OLYMPIAD EARNS FIRST PLACE AT REGIONALS!

Dear Family Fairfax,

Happy Friday! Just when I thought we were going to have a full week of school, with no delay.  For your convenience, I am offering a second coffee opportunity next Friday from 7:30-8:15 am in the career center.  I hosted this morning at 9:30, but I know that many parents might not have known or been aware—and since we cancelled last month for weather, I want to make sure I provide you a couple of opportunities to connect.  Next week’s topic will be a repeat of this morning’s topic.

I try to mention all the activities happening at Fairfax, but I know that I am falling short. There is so much to be proud of and celebrate—I really need the community to help, so please send me an email of your Fairfax Pride!  Also, if you aren’t getting Ms. Melnick’s weekly updates, please subscribe.

Last weekend, I spent some time at a Science Olympiad Regional Tournament:  It was fun to sit and listen to our students talk about the events in which they had or would be competing, and though most events are closed to the public, it was fun to see our students competing in one of the events!  And…we walked away with first place!  Onwards to Charlottesville for our Fairfax Blue in a few weeks.

Our DECA students set out yesterday afternoon for their state competition.  We have many other assessments in the near future, with orchestra tomorrow, and band and chorus in a few weeks—proudly, we know they are READY to WOW us.

I am looking very forward to going to the NBC4  Studios for It’s Academic again tomorrow to see our team compete.  I love a good round of Trivial Pursuit, but I don’t know if I would want to sit across the table from our team and play.

Below, you will find more about our Pride!

Warmly,

Erin B. Lenart

REBELS NEED TO KNOW:

Writing SOL for Juniors

During the week of March 4th, many of our juniors will be taking the writing SOL.  This SOL is part of the English 11 and English 11HN classes and is required by the state.  The test is broken into two parts: multiple choice and short paper, each given on a separate day.  All writing SOLs will begin at 8:10 on the student’s assigned date.  Exact dates of testing have been shared with students through their English teachers.  To prepare for the test, students should get a good night’s sleep the night before and have breakfast.

State Track & Field Meet

The track team travelled to Hampton, VA over the weekend and represented the school very well in the VHSL Class 6 State Track and Field meet.  Trinity McCall placed 12th in the 300 meter dash.  Curtrell Trott placed 19th in the 300M dash.  Marcus Dropik Placed 18th in the 500 meter dash, as well as 8th in the high jump.  The boys 4x200 meter relay team (Mason Mays, Joe Burton, Clay McAlmont and Zahir Saiyed) placed 21st.  Marc Agossou placed 11th in the triple jump.  Bobby Kestyn stood on the podium with a 5th place finish in the shot put.  Finally, the boys 4x400 meter relay team (Curtrell Trott, Joe Burton, Zahir Saiyed and Marcus Dropik) placed 6th in the state, and stood on the podium.

All State Orchestra

All VA Orchestra

Over the weekend the VBODA All-VA Orchestra audition took place at James Madison University and our own Ethan Walter, junior violin, took 10th out of a pool of over 120 violinists. This is the second year in a row that he was selected from FHS to All State Orchestra. He has been invited to play with the orchestra in April to represent Fairfax High School.

Science Honor Society

Science Honor Society

An exciting event happened Wednesday after school with the Science Honor Society. We had two guest speakers from Microsoft, Catherine McSweeney and Navid Azodi. They both graduated from college in May 2018 and have been working at Microsoft since May. They came in to share their experiences and their advice with our students. We were excited to have them visit and they were excited to share their stories with us.
