Dear Families,

Fairfax County Public Schools will be conducting a survey to gather information about family engagement in our schools. Relationships are important to us, and your opinion is critical to help us support your engagement in your child’s education. Your feedback will also help us determine how well we are reaching the goals for Caring Culture we have set in our Strategic Plan. Survey translations will be made available, and the survey can be taken on electronic devices, including smartphones.

Survey administration is scheduled for March 24-April 12, 2019, and you will receive more information about how to take the survey in the near future.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,

Mie Devers

6th Graders as Environmentalists

HAWK

Two groups of 6th grade students have expressed an interest in conducting research on two authentic environmental issues related to our local watershed here in Fairfax County.  The first team will be studying the invasion of Koi at Lake Anne.  Some local citizens have been placing Koi in Lake Anne (Reston).  These invasive species have been causing havoc on the underwater habitat in this lake. The Koi team, working with the Reston Association and other local watershed agencies, will be looking at ways to safely remove the Koi and deliver them to a local Koi farm.

The second team will be studying the plight of one of our area endangered hawks, the American Kestrel.  The Kestrel population in Virginia has been quickly diminishing.  Their habitats are slowly diminishing, and have been coming in contact with poisonous pesticides.  Our students will be studying ways in which we can improve Kestrel populations in Fairfax County.

These students are getting ready to create proposals to be entered into this year’s Caring for Our Watershed competition.  If our proposal are selected as a top 10 finalist, they will be presenting at the 2019 Student Environmental Showcase Youth Summit on Tuesday, April 23rd at George Mason University.

Stay tuned for updates on this exciting research!
