FCPS Discipline Survey

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is studying how school environments relate to discipline practices in the Division. As part of the study, you will receive a survey from FCPS’ Office of Research and Strategic Improvement.  A small number of classrooms will also participate in the study’s student survey. The surveys are designed to help FCPS understand your and your child’s thoughts about the school environment and how discipline is approached in their school.

Surveys to parents will be translated into multiple languages and come via eNotify. Student surveys will be administered at school. Participation is voluntary for you and your child, and all responses will be anonymous.

I encourage you to participate in this important survey to help FCPS understand what is working well and where we can improve.

Thank you,

Justine Klena (JKKlena@fcps.edu)

Letter From FCPS

Dear Parent of Students:

Eating disorders are behaviors that can lead to serious health problems.  These behaviors can begin as a child, and affect both girls and boys.  When discovered early, eating disorders are treatable.  In 2013, Virginia passed a law requiring every school system provide information to parents annually about eating disorders.  This information is given to parents of students in the fifth through twelfth grades.

It is important to note that eating disorders are not identified based on weight changes as much as behaviors and attitudes.  Signs of eating disorders may differ between males and females and in different age groups.  Often, a young person may not recognize the signs that they might have an eating disorder.  Parents/guardians and family members are in a position to notice behaviors that cause concern.  It is important that a child with an eating disorder be treated early by someone who understands this type of care.

After reviewing the information on the back of this letter, if you think your child may be showing signs of a possible eating disorder, please contact your doctor, school nurse, or one of the resources listed below.

Sincerely,

Justine Klena

Do you like to write?  You could win cash!

The Herndon Rotary Club partners with Herndon MS to sponsor a writing contest annually.  Winners from Herndon MS can win prizes and are sent on to Districts to compete for additional prize money.  Essay requirements are below and must follow the guidelines.  Essays are due to Ms. Niles via this Google Form by February 15th.  Each essay must be accompanied by the entry form (which can be  turned in to Ms. Niles in the main office.  Students and parents must also agree to be available to compete at Districts on April 6th, 2019 if selected as a winner.  A committee from Herndon Rotary uses a rubric to score each entry.  See this brochure for more information.

  • First Place for a Herndon MS student:  $200
  • Second Place for a Herndon MS student: $150
  • Third Place for a Herndon MS student:  $100

The essay topic revolves around guiding principles of the Rotary Clubs. It is called the 4 Way Test.  The 4 questions which need to be addressed in the essay are:

  • Is it the truth?
  • Is it fair to all concerned?
  • Will it build good will and better friendships?
  • Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

This is the 4-Way Test applied by Rotarians worldwide to all that they think say and do.

Students should consider these questions and how to weave all into their essay.  If you have questions about this as you reflect on your topic, please ask Ms. Niles at school.  You must address the prompt (the 4 questions).

Final drafts must be submitted in this format:

  • Between 500-1500 words (no more!)
  • Typed in 12 point font
  • Double spaced

The winner from Herndon MS will compete at Districts and could win up to $750 more in prize money.  Herndon MS has had 3 winners at the District Level in the last 7 years!
