Helping students in India

From the Principal's Desk

Dear Members of the CHS Community:

I hope you had a good week. I thought I should share an example of how Chantilly High School students and staff are connecting with and making a difference for students on the other side of the world.

Last fall, 168 students and staff took part in the annual Asha-Jyothi 5K in Fairfax and raised $1750 to help others in need. As they did with all participating schools, Asha-Jyothi agreed to match whatever money each school raised. We decided to donate our money to Generation Yuvaa, a non-governmental social services organization in India that serves abandoned children. Our donation and the matching money provided by Asha-Jyothi purchased food, clothing, and school supplies for the children pictured above. Special thanks to all those who participated int the event and to Asha-Jyothi for their support.

Happy National School Counseling Week!

This week we honored and celebrated our counseling team and the entire staff in Student Services.  The theme nationally for 2019 is “Providing Lessons for Life,” which exemplifies what our dedicated Chantilly counseling team do every day and the contributions they make to our school community.  "School counselors work with all students to remove barriers to learning by addressing students’ academic concerns, career awareness in post-secondary options and social/emotional skills,” said Kwok-Sze Wong, Ed.D., ASCA executive director. “Comprehensive school counseling programs help to increase student achievement and provide a much-needed resource for students, parents, teachers and administrators. School counselors are integral to student success."  Thank you to Ms. Robyn Lady and our entire Student Services Department for the work they do every day for our students!

Chantilly Academy Participating in 6th Real Food for Kids Culinary Challenge

Students from Chantilly Culinary Academy will be participating in Real Food for Kids 6th Annual Culinary Challenge on March 2 at Hayfield Secondary School. The Public Tasting of students’ dishes is from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The “challenge” at the heart of this event is the same one faced by school food professionals every day: to create healthy, delicious and appealing menu items that conform to USDA school meal guidelines. Entries are judged by a panel of students, school food professionals, chefs, and local luminaries. Winners in the lunch category are featured in school cafeterias across the region the following year. The event is FREE to attend, but registration is required.

Get more information and register to attend.

Recent Student Successes

This is the next installment for the school year of what has become a weekly segment aimed at recognizing students for demonstrating recent improvement or achievement in academics, behavior or citizenship. At the end of each recognition, you will see the name of the nominating teacher or staff member. On a rotating basis, departments will nominate students.  I meet with recognized students each week to congratulate them in person.

  • Carter Hicks is not only a hardworking student, but a sincere and genuinely kind person. He takes the time after class to talk with his teachers and build a relationship. He is always engaged in class discussions and contributes interesting anecdotes. We always appreciate his shares. Carter is responsible and advocates for his needs appropriately. He is mature and wise beyond his years! Ms. Mannikka Rosa and Mr. Mike Kirk
  • Alex Romero-Gonzalez is a very polite and hardworking student. He always tries his best and wants to do better on his academics. Alex even asks for homework! Ms. Karen Beers
  • Dima Tambil goes above and beyond in what is asked of her in class. She is always organized, well prepared and gives 120%. She is a deep thinker who is very quiet in class, but when you ask her a question her answer shows deep thought. Ms. Mary Catherine Keating
  • Patrick Wood has worked very hard to improve his social interactions and remember expectations on the job site. His gentle side is coming out as he interacts with others, and he is a joy to work with. Ms. Lauren Soljanyk
