Dear CHS Parents and Guardians:

We Need Your Help to Get Students to School on Time

As mentioned in previous messages to the community earlier this year, improving student attendance is one of our major priorities for the 2018-2019 School Year. I’m pleased to share that we have made major progress when compared to previous years. Current data shows a decrease in tardiness in comparison to last year’s numbers as the majority of Chantilly students seem to be making improved efforts to arrive to school on time and avoid our new  “Tardy Tables”. For example, out of 70 days of school, 51 of these days saw a decrease in the number of students running late to class. This past week, however, we experienced a significant spike in the number of students running late to school in the morning.  Please note that we sometimes give students a grace period in the morning if we become aware of a major accident or inclement weather. The point is that while we are holding students accountable in order to maximize instructional time, we apply our rules with common sense and fairness. Please help us continue to emphasize the value of being in class by teaching your son or daughter good habits and supporting our attendance expectations as outlined below:

IF A STUDENT ARRIVES LATE TO SCHOOL:

  • All students not in class by 8:10 are required to check in at the Tardy Table located at the main entrance of the building (Door 1) to receive a pass to class.  Students arriving to school after 8:20 will be directed to their sub school to check in and receive a pass.
  • Students are considered excused for reasons such as illness, court appointment, medical appointments, etc. but the school must be notified by a parent/guardian.  A parent/guardian may call or email the Student’s sub school.  A parent/guardian or medical office note is also acceptable.
  • Unexcused tardies include oversleeping, car trouble, ride not showing up, missing the bus, traffic, weather issues and other reasons deemed not acceptable by the Administration.
  • Students with excessive tardies will meet with the Dean of Students and consequences may be assigned.

Thanks for helping us set students up for success.

Recent Student Successes

This is the next installment for the school year of what has become a weekly segment aimed at recognizing students for demonstrating recent improvement or achievement in academics, behavior or citizenship. At the end of each recognition, you will see the name of the nominating teacher or staff member. On a rotating basis, departments will nominate students.  I meet with recognized students each week to congratulate them in person.

  • Hayden Lumpkin earned a 98% on his Unit 5 Test on Radicals and Rational Exponents in Algebra 2. In addition, he always comes to class prepared and is an excellent advocate for himself in class when he needs clarification on a concept. Mr. Timothy Murphy
  • In World History 1, Eshal Malik consistently strives to do her best. She submits work in a timely fashion, demonstrates her knowledge on assessments, and serves as a role model for her peers. Mr. Robert Sebring
  • Magnus Sherpa has greatly improved his understanding of Active Physics by working hard in the classroom and at home. He made a great improvement on the most recent Unit Test. He continues to work hard to make sure he understands the subject. Mr. Robert Smith
  • Dream Stewart has dedicated herself to improving her academics overall. She is also fostering positive relationships and the spirit of hard work. I've known Dream for two years and am very happy to see how she's progressed in the past few months. Great job, Dream! Ms. Patricia Heatherly
