Kiss and Ride

Safety continues to be of paramount concern.  While we understand the frustration some parents are experiencing when having to wait their turn for Kiss and Ride drop off, please note that it is never a good idea for your child to be dropped off outside of our school boundaries and asked to walk down the driveway, and in some cases to cross McLearen Road on foot (and in darkness) to reach the school.  Please, if you are choosing to drive your child to school, we ask that you use the designated Kiss and Ride loop for drop off and abide by the rules that are in place to keep all of our students safe.

Report Card Distribution

Second quarter ends January 24, 2019.  As a reminder report cards will be sent home with students on Friday, February 1, 2019. Don’t forget to ask your child for his/her report card on Friday, February 1, 2019.   If you do not receive a report card, please contact the Student Services office at 703-925-3613. If you have specific questions concerning your child’s grades, contact his/her teacher directly.

Next week, 8th grade students will begin their units in Emotional and Social Health.  Seventh grade students will have their lessons at the end of February.  Students that have been opted out will have an alternative assignment in the library.  If you have any questions regarding lessons or your child's participation, please contact their PE teacher.  Family Life Education units will be taught April 9-12 for both 7th and 8th grade students.

Previewing content:  All lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights to for both Family Life Education and Emotional/Social Health are available to parents in FCPS 24/7 in My FCPS Parent.

Assistance for Furloughed Employees

With news of the Federal Government temporarily reopening, we recognize the strain and stress put on some of our families over the last month.  Please let us know if your family is in need of resources or assistance during these trying times.  Your requests will be kept confidential.

Rising 7th Grade Curriculum Night

Parents and Guardians of students who will attend Rachel Carson Middle School beginning in the fall of 2019  are cordially invited to RCMS to attend the Rising 7th Grade Curriculum Night on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 (SNOW DATE: WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 6). This program is designed to provide parents an opportunity to learn about the middle school course selection process, the academic and elective course offerings and requirements, and afterschool programs that are available.

The program for parents participating in special education will begin at 5:30PM in the library.

At 6:15PM, the elective showcase for parents will begin.  Parents should report directly to RCMS cafeteria for an elective showcase. Have you ever wondered what goes on in the elective classes? Parents, this is your opportunity to learn more about the different elective options at Rachel Carson Middle and ask teachers questions before you and your child select electives for the next year. Elective teachers will be introducing information on their exciting and engaging classes for school year 2019-2020.

At 7:00PM, the general session for parents will begin.  Parents should report directly to RCMS Gymnasium for the general program overview. The Curriculum Night will conclude at 8:15PM.

It is our hope that you will gain valuable information to facilitate conversations with your child as you help them prepare to make appropriate course selections.

For your convenience, overflow parking will be available at Nysmith School.

If Fairfax County Public Schools cancels evening activities for Wednesday, January 30, 2019 this event will be rescheduled for Wednesday, February 6, 2019. If you have any questions, please contact Rachel Carson Middle School Student Services at 703-925-3614.
