Literacy News

In 3rd quarter, grades 1-6 will be working on a content area research unit.  Students will research a topic from content taught in science and social studies.  The unit focuses on reading non-fiction as well as putting that information learned into a writing piece.  This looks different in complexity across the grade levels.  One way to compliment these units is to visit the public library to research a question your child may have.  You could also think about a topic and generate questions you would like to know about that topic.  Lastly, you could read nonfiction books at home and talk about what you learned.  Pointing out text features (headings, titles, bold words, photographs) and how they help you learn new information helps students to understand how those features help our understanding of a topic.
