Paw Print week of January 14-18, 2019

Principal's Message

Dear Panther Families,

Welcome back and welcome to 2019! What a great first week of the new year! Our teachers and students were back refreshed and ready for the new year. Classrooms were buzzing with great conversations, lessons and reviewing of expectations. Mother Nature even cooperated on Tuesday to allow us to do our January Fire Drill.

Just a reminder that Poplar Tree PTA is hosting our International Heritage Night tonight starting at 6pm. It should be a wonderful evening for all.

Under the upcoming dates section of this Paw Print, we have included links to the FCPS school year calendars for this school year and next school year. We know that some of you have already seen the calendars and wanted to have them easily available for your reference and planning.

We hope you have a great weekend!

Ms. Andujar and Ms. Walker

P2

Positivity Project

This week our focus has been on the character strength of perseverance.

Individuals with the character strength of perseverance are those who can spend long periods of time devoted to a single goal or set of goals. Those who persevere are able to set goals for themselves and then take active, calculated steps toward those goals. They might be described as: persistent, devoted, hardworking, gritty, committed or industrious.

To quote Martin Luther King, Jr “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”

If you are interested in learning more about the Positivity Project,  please visit their website or the Poplar Tree website Positivity Project

Inclement weather

FCPS Inclement Weather

Due to inclement weather or other emergency situations, it may be necessary to close schools for the entire day, to open schools two hours late, or to close two hours early. Parents are urged to make arrangements now for the care of their children when schedule changes are made (and to provide for the rare situation when it is necessary to close an individual school because of a power failure or other circumstances). Children should know where to go or what to do if a parent will not be or is not home.

Read more about Weather Cancellation Procedures.

Change to SACC’s Inclement Weather Policy

School-Age Child Care’s (SACC) inclement weather policy for days when FCPS announces a two-hour delayed opening has been revised. Effective January 7, 2019, on days when FCPS announces a two-hour delay, SACC centers will open at 8 a.m. (instead of 7 a.m.) for children enrolled in the before-school session. SACC's one-hour delayed opening will provide additional time for road conditions to improve and be adequately assessed, and for parking lots and sidewalks to be cleared as needed.

FYI

VDOE Student School Climate Survey Cancelled

Before the winter break, we notified you that your child would be taking a statewide Student School Climate Survey mandated by the Virginia Department of Education. This survey was scheduled to be conducted from Monday, January 14, 2019 to Friday, February 8, 2019.

Based on feedback from principals and school administrators, Dr. Brabrand, in collaboration and consultation with State Superintendent, Dr. Lane, has granted an exemption of the VDOE Student School Climate Survey for this year.

Therefore, the VDOE Student School Climate survey will not be administered.
