From the Principal's Desk

Dear Members of the CHS Community:

As the holidays approach, I’ve been inspired by the actions of many Chantilly HS students, staff and parents. The pictures below portray just a few of the ways that members of the CHS community have come together to help each other. Last week, the CHS Performing Arts Department hosted our annual Tiny Tots program for hundreds of community members. On Tuesday, our Cosmetology students facilitated gift giving for Head Start students. On Tuesday evening, photography students led by teacher Betty Simmons partnered with the Fairfax Police Department to prepare meals and wrap presents for those in need. The community of Chantilly doesn’t have a downtown, town center, or annual fair, and is, I believe, defined in large part by what happens here at our high school.  The acts of giving and service that I’ve experienced this holiday season remind me of one of my favorite quotes, “In real life the most practical advice for leaders is not to treat pawns like pawns, nor princes like princes, but all persons like persons.” I’m fortunate to work in a school filled with leaders that follow this advice every day.

I wish you the best of holidays,

Scott

Recent Student Successes

This is the next installment for the school year of what has become a weekly segment aimed at recognizing students for demonstrating recent improvement or achievement in academics, behavior or citizenship. At the end of each recognition, you will see the name of the nominating teacher or staff member. On a rotating basis, departments will nominate students.  I meet with recognized students each week to congratulate them in person.

  • Michael Cadena works hard and is very successful. He is a stellar student in Lit Labs 2,3. I am very proud of him. Way to go Michael! Ms. Marian Patey
  • Esraa Dafaalla has continued to craft her argumentative and analytical writing skills with a unique subdued drive and true grit. Rarely have I seen a student work as diligently and resolutely as Esraa with a grace and class all her own, all in the name of genuine improvement. Mr. Bobby Nelson
  • Outstanding is the only word to adequately describe Kimberly Lee in her dual role as Business Editor of Odyssey yearbook, and a member of our photojournalism class. She is efficient and passionate about her job, and encourages all her classmates to be part of the process. Her record-keeping is flawless and her communication with parents mature and respectful. Ms. Mary Kay Downes
  • When Dylan Molodow transferred into our program from an IB school (and into our class mid-unit), I was nervous about his transition. Dylan immediately put me at ease by being his gentle, kind, hardworking self. From his first day in 8th period, he contributed his affable spirit and tenacious drive, and we are all the better to have him among us. Ms. Molli Atallah
  • Noyanika Vattathara's quiet brilliance peeked out in her class' recent Socratic Seminar. She was bold, and she defended her position out loud and on the spot against a classmates' pointed rebuttal. She stood firm next to her original interpretation and her improvised analysis was enlivening to the discussion. Ms. Julianne Abruzzo
