It is with mixed emotions that we bid a bon voyage to Gloria Leckner, our school registrar as she retires from Fairfax County Public Schools after 27 years of service. She is excited to embark on lots of travel with her husband to see different parts of the United States and to spend more time with her grandchildren! We wish her well and know that she will be missed!!!! |

Afternoon Dismissal of Kindergarten Students at Door 2
Kindergarten parents that pick up their students for dismissal at Door 2 will continue to be asked daily to show their K & R number card. Although the teachers and IAs often recognize the parents by now as they arrive at the door, we must request that every person show their K & R number card. This policy is in place to ensure the safety of each and every child and helps us in the event there are substitutes or other school personnel helping that do not immediately recognize which parent goes with which student. Thank you so much for your cooperation and understanding of this safety policy.
Positivity project
Students are learning more about “Self-control” as one of the character traits that are part of the learning from the Positivity Project. “Self-control is the act of managing behavior in a way that positively influences goal attainment and living up to standards. Possessing this strength protects people from destabilizing emotional extremes. Those with self-control are able to limit impulsive behavior. They have the ability to experience and navigate difficulty while remaining poised.” Please find a way to discuss this idea with your children this week as we support their understanding of self-control and how it can enrich our everyday lives.

Information about the Immersion Program for 2019-2020
School Year 2019-2020 Immersion Program Information Each year, rising kindergarteners and first graders have the chance to participate in Immersion programs available in French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish offered at: Bailey’s, Fort Hunt, Fox Mill, Great Falls, Kent Gardens, Lake Anne, Laurel Ridge, London Towne, Orange Hunt, Powell, Ravensworth, and Rose Hill elementary schools through a county-wide lottery process. Online registration for this lottery process opens on January 28, 2019. Registration is open to all rising kindergarteners and first graders living in Fairfax County. A SIS account is required to complete the application. If a student is not currently enrolled in FCPS, registration at the base school for the upcoming school year will be required. Please be aware that FCPS does not provide transportation for students who reside outside the attendance area of the immersion schools and a one-time fee of $100 must be paid upon acceptance of an out-of-boundary placement (see Notice 5922).
In the Immersion Program, children spend half of the day in the target language learning math, science, and health. Target language arts skills are integrated in the content area skills. The other half of the day is spent learning in English focusing on English language arts and social studies. The instructional program follows the Fairfax County Public Schools Program of Studies at each grade level. Math, science, and health were chosen because they use manipulatives and concrete, hands-on activities, both of which help with the natural second language acquisition process. Students can connect the skills learned across both languages.
