Highlighting PYP in Physical Education

The Primary Years Programme framework is based on the development of learning skills in an inquiry driven and transdisciplinary way through a focus of developing conceptual understanding.  The 8 key concepts are form, function, causation, change, connection, perspective, responsibility, and reflection.  Students have been learning about these concepts in their classrooms and throughout their day.

In Physical Education, students have been applying these 8 key concepts as they participated in their basketball unit.  The students learned about their form as they shot baskets.  They focused on reflection when thinking about what they could have done differently after missing a shot.

At the end of their basketball unit, Ms. Brod and Ms. Eschen asked students to reflect on how they applied their understanding of the 8 concepts during the unit.

Breaking the Cycle

Break the cycle

Every year, school absences spike in the weeks before and after winter break, as families squeeze a few more days of vacation out of the holiday season. Let’s break that cycle. Make sure your child is in school every day. Because the best gift you can give your child is a good education.

Our Littlest Learners! What’s Going on in the Preschool Autism Classroom?

Our littlest learners are loving exploring their world and developing their language through play with their teachers and each other. In the PAC classroom we have seven sweet and inquisitive boys and 4 wonderful staff members. Mrs. Jessica, Mrs. Maria, Ms. Dulce, and Mrs. Eyman work together with our boys to create opportunities for each boy to work on their own goals while also creating a classroom community and experiencing realistic school and world activities.

We work on helping the boys increase their language, increase their play, and increase their communication with their friends.

We love:

-collecting leaves outside

-playing tag

-trying new foods

-playing with the sensory table

-making the train track

-using musical instruments

-singing and dancing along to lots of songs

We loved having our family visit for Thanksgiving Lunch!

RIF week is coming!

The week of December 17-21 is RIF Week.  Each student will select a free book and participate in an activity during their Library time.  These books have been purchased through Reading Is Fundamental due to the generous funding of Navient Corporation.  Navient has been our RIF supporter for more than 10 years. In addition to financially supporting our RIF program, Navient sends volunteers to help with our activities.  This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to “shop” for a free book to keep at home to read and enjoy.  Next week be sure to ask your child about their RIF book.  Watch for pictures of our RIF distribution in next week’s News You Choose

e-Notify Emergency Messages Will Be Communicated via New Vendor Beginning December 14

Fairfax County Public Schools will be moving to a new vendor to provide emergency and essential email, text, and phone notifications beginning December 14, 2018. If you currently receive emergency and essential communications via email, text, or phone, you do not need to do anything as you will continue to receive this information.

Parents and guardians who have included a cellphone number (in the cellphone field) on a student’s emergency care card will receive a text message on December 14 to confirm the account is set up to receive text messages from FCPS.  You do not need to do anything when you receive the text message from the new vendor, School Messenger, on December 14th. If you do not receive a text message, please check the contact information listed on your child’s emergency care card in weCare. Your cellphone number must be listed in the cellphone field in order to receive text messages from FCPS.

New this year, parents can enter their student’s cellphone number in weCare so that their student will also receive text messages for delayed openings, school closings, and late bus notifications. The student’s cellphone number will need to be entered in Section 4, under Additional Information.  If the student’s cellphone is listed in weCare, they will also receive the text message on December 14.

Emergency and essential information includes:

  • Emergency
  • Delayed openings/school closings
  •  Attendance
  • Early release
  • Buses running late
  • Low lunch balance
  • Power, telephone, internet outages or facility repairs
  • Back to school information
  • Important testing dates

If you have recently changed your contact information, please be sure to update the emergency contact information in weCare.

As a reminder, in addition to email and text messages, all FCPS weather delays and openings are also posted on Twitter, Facebook, FCPS website, school websites, and local radio and television broadcasts. Read more about Weather Cancellation Procedures.
