Dear CES,

Did you know that CES is a member of the FCPS' Global Classroom Project? Centreville Elementary School’s Global Classroom is a virtual partnership where our students work with grade level peers in Costa Rica on authentic tasks and challenges through a variety of learning opportunities and digital tools. What started three years ago as the Global STEAM Classroom Initiative in 5th grade, has now grown to include participating classes in grades 4 – 6 and includes the additional pathway of sustainability. Through linking our Google Domains with our partner schools in Costa Rica, students share a common Google Classroom through which they communicate and collaborate on their work. Google Hangouts also provide a means of connecting and fostering our relationships with our Costa Rican classmates. By working on authentic and meaningful learning opportunities in a learner-centered environment with our global peers, ALL students cultivate Portrait of a Graduate skills.

This year students in Mrs. Sobol's, Mrs. McCarroll's, and Mrs. Trimble's classes will be connected and learning with students from Costa Rica. As an added bonus, in January 12 students and 5 staff members from Costa Rica will be visiting CES. They will be partnering up with students from Mrs. Sobol's 6th grade class. During their time with us, we plan to hold two school-wide evening events events:

  • Family Dinner & STEAM Night on Tuesday, January 15th
  • International Night on Friday, January 18th

We hope that you will consider bringing your family to these events to meet our Costa Rican friends.

This past week our students focused on the power of our words and actions.

"Knowing that my words and actions affect others."

This means that everything we do, say, text, tweet, snap, or post can positively or negatively impact other people. According to research from McKinsey & Co, “the typical American hears or reads more than one hundred thousand words every day.” Think about that for a moment: 100,000 words every single day. Now, stop and ask yourself, “Are the percentage of words someone else hears or reads from me helping or hurting that person?” As Rachel Wolchin says, “Be mindful with words. A string of some that don’t mean much to you may stick with someone for a lifetime.”

And, moving beyond our words and social media posts, our actions can have ripple effects long after we make them. Deeds highlighting our character – such as forgiving a sibling, being present and enthusiastic about a colleague’s presentation, or kindly holding the elevator door for a stranger – can impact the people we love, work with, or even just bump into on the street. Through your actions – and the character strengths you do/don’t exemplify in them – you have the power to make somebody happy, sad, inspired, or discouraged. And, always remember, our words and actions are our choices to make.
