e-Notify Emergency Messages Will Be Communicated via New Vendor Beginning December 14

Fairfax County Public Schools will be moving to a new vendor to provide emergency and essential email, text, and phone notifications beginning December 14, 2018. If you currently receive emergency and essential communications via email, text, or phone, you do not need to do anything as you will continue to receive this information.

Parents and guardians who have included a cellphone number (in the cellphone field) on a student’s emergency care card will receive a text message on December 14 to confirm the account is set up to receive text messages from FCPS.  You do not need to do anything when you receive the text message from the new vendor, School Messenger, on December 14th. If you do not receive a text message, please check the contact information listed on your child’s emergency care card in weCare. Your cellphone number must be listed in the cellphone field in order to receive text messages from FCPS.

New this year, parents can enter their student’s cellphone number in weCare so that their student will also receive text messages for delayed openings, school closings, and late bus notifications. The student’s cellphone number will need to be entered in Section 4, under Additional Information.  If the student’s cellphone is listed in weCare, they will also receive the text message on December 14.

Emergency and essential information includes:

  • Emergency
  • Delayed openings/school closings
  •  Attendance
  • Early release
  • Buses running late
  • Low lunch balance
  • Power, telephone, internet outages or facility repairs
  • Back to school information
  • Important testing dates

If you have recently changed your contact information, please be sure to update the emergency contact information in weCare.

As a reminder, in addition to email and text messages, all FCPS weather delays and openings are also posted on Twitter, Facebook, FCPS website, school websites, and local radio and television broadcasts. Read more about Weather Cancellation Procedures.

Important Message from Robinson Secondary School Administration

Vaping/Juuling:

In recent months, Robinson administrators, faculty, and staff have noticed an increase in the number of students reporting the use of vaping devices/e-cigarettes at school and in our community. Vaping is the act of inhaling vapor produced by a vaporizer or electronic cigarette. The vapor is produced from a material such as an e-liquid, concentrate or dry herb.

We are concerned that some students and parents seem to perceive vaping as a relatively innocuous activity that is less harmful than other tobacco products. It is important to note that:

  • Materials used in vaping devices are coming under regulatory scrutiny. The Office of the U.S. Surgeon General and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control states that potentially harmful chemicals, including nicotine; ultrafine particles that can be inhaled deep into the lungs; flavoring such as diacetyl, a chemical linked to a serious lung disease; volatile organic compounds such as benzene, which is found in car exhaust; and heavy metals, such as nickel, tin, and lead are components that make it worthwhile for us to discourage student use of vaping devices. https://e-cigarettes.surgeongeneral.gov/about.html https://www.cdc.gov/features/ecigarettes-young-people/index.html
  • Vaping devices can be used to deliver a wide array of other drugs, including marijuana.

We encourage all of our parents/guardians to discuss the potential dangers of vaping with their son or daughter. In addition, please remind your student that both FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities and the FCPS Participation Policy specifically ban the use of smoking devices and electronic cigarettes. Please click on the link below for more information regarding vaping devices/e-cigarettes.

World Languages Department is Ramtastic!

Every year the World Languages Department collects gifts for the Robinson and Bonnie Brae Head Start students for the holidays.  This effort was started by retired French teacher Christine Schaffrath and this year was continued by the German Department.  Students from French, German, Latin and Spanish collected gifts (including Legos, coloring books, crayons and markers, puzzles, winter hats and gloves, books, Play Doh, etc.) while our WAT students helped by making the name tags for all 54 head start students.  This was obviously a Robinson wide effort!

On December 5th, the culmination of the event occurred in the D-Pod, where students and teachers came together to wrap all of the gifts (about 650 gifts in total!).  German students even provided homemade cookies to keep everyone’s energy up!  We know that this small act of kindness will make a lasting difference in all of these little 4 year old’s lives!

WL and Head Start Gifts

WL December Gift Giving

Hi Robinson Community!

Each year in our school, we have 25-30 families that are identified as high need and need additional support around the holiday season to make the holiday’s a bit brighter for our students.  Due to limited community resources and many programs being targeted for younger kids, our students, are often not eligible for gift assistance programs.  We try and provide each family with $50-$75 to help with a holiday meal and a $25 gift card, per child, to a store such as Walmart or Target to buy a gift or to be the gift.

We are asking for gift cards to be turned into the Main Office, Christyn Levy in Sub-school 12 or Kristen Licciardo in Sub-school 7.  It is VERY helpful if you can write the denomination amount on the gift card so we can ensure each family is getting similar amounts.  Preference for gift cards are to Giant, Safeway, Target, and Walmart but we are happy to accept gift cards to popular fast food places the students frequent, as well.  Any gift cards that are not distributed to families at the holidays will be used throughout the school year for emergency food and basic need items for families in need.

We are asking that all gift cards be turned in by December 14th so we have the following week to get them delivered to families.

Thank you so much for being such a kind, caring and generous school community!
