IB LEARNER PROFILE OF THE MONTH: CARING

caring

In December, we will be focused on the learner profile attribute of caring.  During the three weeks leading up to winter break, our school will be filled with students and teachers discussing and reflecting on what it looks and sounds like to be caring.

As caring individuals we:

*show compassion and respect for others through acts of kindness and service

Here are some ideas to promote the attribute of caring at home:

  1. After reading a fiction story, ask questions about the character

-”Was someone in the book caring?  How do you know?”

-”How did the character feel in the story?  Why did they feel that way?

-”Were all the characters in the book caring or just some of them?”

  1. Work together to think of simple ways that you can help others and the environment
  2. Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.  Discuss how these actions help to take care of our environment
  3. Model and discuss the caring behavior you would like to see in your child.  For example; using kind words, helping people without being asked, holding the door for someone, or being an active listener shows that you care about someone.

Here are some books that can support the conversation about being caring:

The Best Gift - Being Present

gift

This holiday season, the best gift you can give your child is a good education. And the best place to get an education is in school. It’s tempting to extend your vacation by a few days, but remember, those days count as absences. Just a few missed days here and there, even if they’re excused absences, can add up to too much lost learning time. So make sure your child is in school every day, right up until vacation starts. Our teachers will be teaching, and our students will be learning.

Counseling Corner

heart

Beginning in October, the school counseling team kicked off the Caring Hearts Campaign! This project will be an ongoing effort to recognize and celebrate students who have shown exceptional acts of caring toward their fellow classmates. Students’ names and caring acts are acknowledged in their classrooms, on the morning announcements, and throughout the halls of Dogwood Elementary School. This is a school-wide project that will continue all throughout the school year and, so far, we have celebrated nearly 150 students who have been caring classmates, Dragons, and friends. Keep it up, Dogwood! Good work!

Full-Time Level IV (Center Screening Procedures)

Guidelines:

Parents or guardians may refer students in Grade 2 who are not in the screening pool, and students in Grades 3-7 by submitting the Advanced Academic Programs Level IV Referral Form to the school. The referral is due January 10, 2019 5pm. Attn: Stephanie Guffain, AART.  We will confirm that it has been received.

Referrals:

The completed form is submitted to the school principal or AART who acknowledges, in writing, receipt of the referral. Do not wait for test scores to arrive before submitting a referral for your student as there will be no referrals for Level IV screening accepted past the January 10th deadline.

Screening Files:

The local school screening committee prepares and submits completed Level IV screening files to be evaluated by the countywide central selection committee. Multiple sources of information are reviewed to determine eligibility for placement in Level IV. Documents included in the screening file are listed below. Parents or guardians are responsible only for those documents specifically noted, to be turned in to the AART by the January 10th deadline.

e-Notify Emergency Messages Will Be Communicated via New Vendor Beginning December 14

Fairfax County Public Schools will be moving to a new vendor to provide emergency and essential email, text, and phone notifications beginning December 14, 2018. If you currently receive emergency and essential communications via email, text, or phone, you do not need to do anything as you will continue to receive this information.

Parents and guardians who have included a cellphone number (in the cellphone field) on a student’s emergency care card will receive a text message on December 14 to confirm the account is set up to receive text messages from FCPS.  You do not need to do anything when you receive the text message from the new vendor, School Messenger, on December 14th. If you do not receive a text message, please check the contact information listed on your child’s emergency care card in weCare. Your cellphone number must be listed in the cellphone field in order to receive text messages from FCPS.

New this year, parents can enter their student’s cellphone number in weCare so that their student will also receive text messages for delayed openings, school closings, and late bus notifications. The student’s cellphone number will need to be entered in Section 4, under Additional Information.  If the student’s cellphone is listed in weCare, they will also receive the text message on December 14.

Emergency and essential information includes:

  • Emergency
  • Delayed openings/school closings
  •  Attendance
  • Early release
  • Buses running late
  • Low lunch balance
  • Power, telephone, internet outages or facility repairs
  • Back to school information
  • Important testing dates

If you have recently changed your contact information, please be sure to update the emergency contact information in weCare.

As a reminder, in addition to email and text messages, all FCPS weather delays and openings are also posted on Twitter, Facebook, FCPS website, school websites, and local radio and television broadcasts. Read more about Weather Cancellation Procedures.
