November 8th Family Life Education Information and Preview

Students in grades K-6 participate in Family Life Education (FLE) instruction through their classroom teacher. Students in Kindergarten through grade three receive instruction in an emotional and social health unit. Students in grades 4-6 receive instruction in a human growth and development unit and an emotional and social health unit. For more information about the FCPS Family Life Education program, please see the detailed grade-level program descriptions at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-family-life-education-fle.

You are invited to attend an evening opportunity to preview the Family Life Education media and lessons and to talk with school staff about the program. The meeting will be held on November 8, 2018 at 6:30 pm in the library at Dogwood All program materials and media for all grade levels will be available for your review at this time.

Parents/guardians who do not wish to have their child participate in FLE instruction may choose to opt their child out of any or all of the lessons. If you would like to opt your child out of one or more lessons, please fill out the form provided to you in your child’s orientation packet at the beginning of the school year or you may access the opt out forms online at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-family-life-education-fle. If you have already indicated your desire to opt your child out of FLE lessons by using the form provided earlier in the school year, you do not need to complete another form. Should you opt your child out and then later decide you want your child included in FLE instruction, you must notify your child’s teacher in writing before instruction begins.

An alternative non-FLE health instructional program is provided for children who do not take part in FLE instruction, and every effort is made to foster understanding and respect for family choices and to avoid peer pressure for or against participation in the program

Mrs. Mandruleanu, our Reading Coach shares how you can support reading at home.

I’ve been teaching reading to elementary children for 20 years, and the beauty of watching a child learn to read never grows old. This is especially true as I marvel at my son’s emergent reading. He started kindergarten this year, and he suddenly wants to know what every street sign says. He proudly announces whenever he sees a word he knows from his classroom word wall, amazed that the words in his classroom can be found in the books on his book shelf. When I mention my excitement to friends, they smile and say, “Of course. You’re a reading teacher.” But I haven’t taught my son to read. I don’t drill sight words, or tell him to sound words out. What I have done since the day he was born, is read to him, sing to him, and talk to him. That’s what teachers need from us, as parents. They want us to talk to our children about their school day and their books. They want us to make reading a pleasant time to snuggle and enjoy a book together. They want us to sing funny songs and play with words, because just a few joyful moments a day can make a world of difference to a new reader.

Second Graders explore innovations

2nd grade

Second grade has been exploring how interactions impact our lives and lead to innovations over time. This week students examined the change of transportation over time. In doing so, conversations on change, causation and connection have been driving our learning. Students have had the opportunity to notice changes, explore the causes and imagine and create an innovation for the future. Through a daily “MakerSpace,” students have creatively constructed flying cars, cars that run on fruit juice instead of gas, and designed more comfortable seating arrangements for families with many siblings. We are excited to transfer our learning to our Native American tribes and the ways they interacted with their environment to create innovations.
