Glasgow Community:

I hope you are enjoying the beautiful weather this weekend. My Saturday revolved around sports. In the morning coaching and watching my daughter’s softball game and Ohio State football at night. On Sunday, we are taking our annual family trip to Cox Farms.

It was another eventful week at Glasgow Middle School. On Tuesday evening, Glasgow teachers and admin provided parents an overview of our assessment practices and grading policies. If you weren’t able to attend, here is a link to the presentation titled, “Grading at Glasgow - An IBMYP Approach”. http://bit.ly/2CVot5y

The fall chorus concert was last Thursday. Congrats to Ms. Landsberry and the all the Glasgow singers. On Friday, we hosted members of the FCPS Leadership Team and visited classrooms with a focus on the academic task. At Glasgow we define academic task as the level of thinking students are expected to do, as well as what and how they are doing it.

This week, we will once again host leaders from FCPS in addition to the Virginia State Superintendent of Instruction. On Monday, we host the FCPS Academic Learning Group, which includes Dr. Scott Brabrand and Deputy Superintendent Dr. Frances Ivey, as well as the Region Assistant Superintendents and Executive Principals from Regions 1 through 5, and leadership from Instructional Services. On Friday, we host Dr. James Lane from Virginia Department of Education as well as Del. Kaye Kory and School Board Member Sandy Evans.

Check out my Twitter account to keep up with the latest news. Link: http://bit.ly/2Cv6MbY. It is an exciting time to be a member of the Glasgow community!

As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

Article of the Week

Kids are facing a host of influences that are relatively new in the history of kid-dom—clever advertising and social media are creating pulls toward products and appearances that must be very strong. How to protect kids against these forces isn't such a straightforward task for the parent. Volunteer Opportunities

Get Involved, Volunteer Today! - The Glasgow PTA needs YOU! See volunteer opportunities at Glasgow Middle School, supporting our teachers and staff, throughout the year: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c084aa4a92da0fc1-glasgow12

Open Campus Donations Needed - Open Campus is right around the corner and as we have started planning, we have noticed we are in need of a few items people may have around their homes! If you or your family has any lightly used nail polish that you are willing to donate, we would love to add it to our collection.  We are also in need of gently used pots! If you have any old pots that you’d be willing to donate, we could use a few extra. Email Lauren Oliver at lroliver@fcps.edu if you have any questions or wish to donate

Important Information

Student-Parent Survey For Federal Impact Aid - FCPS will be asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid. Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an anticipated $3 million dollars in grant funds each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3.  All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by October 26. All results are CONFIDENTIAL.

Learn more by watching this short video featuring Superintendent Scott Brabrand and the U.S. Army Garrison Commander COL Michael Greenberg from Fort Belvoir.
