2018-2019 CES Family Bulletin #8

Weekly Photos

Dear CES,

Thank you to all of the volunteers that helped make our Fall Book Fair a huge success! We had great attendance at our Saturday and Tuesday events. We also had a wonderful turnout at the Family Dinner and STEAM night. We hope to see you at our next one on Tuesday, November 27.

We often receive questions around student bullying and  students-to-student safety. CES and FCPS are deeply committed to creating a safe and positive school environment where all students can learn.  Through school-wide positive behavior approaches (PBIS & Positivity Project) and participation in K-6 health and guidance lessons students are taught to behave respectfully and to resolve conflicts in positive ways.  A culture of acceptance and creation of safe opportunities to discuss concerns is actively developed through class meetings, interactions, and relationships with caring adults.

So, What is Bullying and what is not Bullying?

Bullying in Students Rights and Responsibilities is defined as:  “Any aggressive and unwanted behavior that is intended to harm, intimidate, or humiliate the victim; involves a real or perceived power imbalance between the aggressor or aggressors and victim; and is repeated over time or causes severe emotional trauma. “Bullying” includes cyberbullying. “Bullying” does not include ordinary teasing, horseplay, argument, or peer conflict.”

Student safety is our number 1 priority. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions and or concerns about student safety and bullying.

CES' Cell Phone Policy

Students are allowed to bring cell phones to school; however, they must be turned off and stored in their backpacks during the school day. If a student is using their phone during school, a staff member will bring the phone down to the office. A parent/guardian must come to the office and pick the phone up. Students will not be allowed to retrieve the phone. Parents/guardians will be notified prior to dismissal if a student's cell phone has been taken.

Centreville Honors Our Veterans

On Monday, November 12th, the federal observance of Veterans Day, Centreville Elementary School would like to honor veterans with a special event at our school.  We will have a luncheon prepared in your honor that you will be able to enjoy with your student(s) at CES.  Any relatives of our CES students who are veterans are welcome to join us in our event.

We also would like to invite you to read to students in classrooms around our building.  This is a great opportunity for our students to learn about how you have served and to show their appreciation for your service.  If interested, veterans may choose between two time slots to be a guest reader in several classrooms around the school.  Choice 1 will be 10:30am-12pm reading in classrooms and Choice 2 will be 1:00pm – 2:30pm reading in classrooms.  Lunch for all guest readers and their children will be held in the library from 12:00pm-1:00pm.

Thank you so much for your service.  We hope many veterans will be able to attend this special event at CES.  If you are interested, please sign up using this form.

STUDENT-PARENT SURVEY FOR FEDERAL IMPACT AID

Beginning on October 16th, FCPS will be asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid.

Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an anticipated $3 million dollars in grant funds each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3.  All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by October 26. All results are CONFIDENTIAL.

Learn more by watching this short video featuring Superintendent Scott Brabrand and the U.S. Army Garrison Commander COL Michael Greenberg from Fort Belvoir.

This past week our students focused on INTEGRITY!

WHAT DOES INTEGRITY MEAN?

You are honest and speak the truth. You present yourself genuinely and sincerely. Integrity is doing the right thing when nobody is watching. People with integrity practice what they preach and maintain a consistent pattern of behavior aligned with their values. They have the courage not to follow the crowd if it means going against their beliefs. Integrity is closely aligned with the terms of honesty and authenticity. People with integrity tell the truth and have alignment in their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

A person who lacks integrity could be described as pretentious, hypocritical, or insincere. They are pretending to be something that they’re not or they’re saying one thing and then doing another. It is important to be able to change your mind (and be open-minded), as you learn and grow. However, the main distinction comes in the intention. Is the person intending to manipulate another? A second important facet is self-awareness. It’s tough to be true to yourself, if you don’t know who you are.
