2018-2019 CES Family Bulletin #7

Weekly Photo

Dear CES,

We had another great week here at CES! The staff and students have been taking advantage of the nice weather by heading outside for some outdoor learning. Speaking of outdoor learning, tomorrow will be our Fall School Clean-up day (9:00am - 1:00pm). We are in need of volunteers to help beautify our school grounds. This is a great opportunity for students to gain volunteer/community service hours. Also, while you are at CES you can stop by the Book Fair and purchase a few books!

Last night our PTA had their first meeting of the year. It was a very productive meeting with a great turnout. The sixth grade teachers and students engaged us by sharing reflections from their Camp High Roads experience. Thank you to everyone who came out. We hope to see more of you at our November meeting, where first grade staff and students will be sharing with us.

In the near future, we will begin to teach our Family Life Education (FLE) units of study. Please click HERE to learn more about the FLE curriculum and opt out options. In November, CES will host a parent preview night. During this evening event parents will be able to explore and learn more about the FLE curriculum.

Please continue to engage in our family events, as we look forward to our continued collaboration and positive relationship building!

Digital Citizenship Week 2018-19: Building a Culture of Shared Responsibility Every Student, Every Teacher, Every Parent, Every Day

Digital Citizenship Week is coming October 15th – 19th! This year’s focus is on Building a Culture of Shared Responsibility. Each day during the week, schools and parents/caregivers can take simple steps to get in sync and partner together to educate and support students with digital life.

Below, you’ll find materials for both home and school for the week. Monday through Wednesday offers complementary activities and conversations that can begin at school and extend into the home. On Thursday and Friday, instructional staff and parents are provided the same simple strategies that can be used at home and at school to support students. A common message from trusted adults has a big impact on kids!

We hope Digital Citizenship Week will spark some educationally valuable conversations that can be promoted and supported all year long, by both parents and teaching staff.

This past week our students focused on identifying and appreciating the good in others.

Identifying and appreciating the good in others isn’t always what comes naturally. Often, it’s easier to blame others for our problems or find flaws in others to use as excuses for our own jealousy, bitterness, or resentment.

To see the good in others, we must first slow down and take the time to pay attention. Look for the intentions behind people’s words and actions. If you feel slighted, you can use perspective and ask, “Did that person intend to hurt me or did he/she just come across in an awkward manner?”

Please take time this weekend to identify and appreciate the good in others and share those thoughts with your children.

Beginning on October 16th, FCPS will be asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid.

Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an anticipated $3 million dollars in grant funds each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3.  All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by October 26. All results are CONFIDENTIAL.
