Signs of Suicide Program

Poe Student Services staff (Counselors, Social Workers, and Psychologists) plan to implement the Signs of Suicide program for 7th grade classes during Raven Time on October 23, 2018.  After watching a brief DVD, students will complete a wellness screening survey. The wellness screening tool we are using does not provide a diagnosis of depression, but does give an indication of whether a young person may require intervention or further evaluation.

Depending on their score on the survey, a student services professional may follow up with the student to assess the possible need for further intervention (e.g., referral for counseling or further evaluation by a mental health professional). Parents will be contacted if their child is identified as being at-risk for depression and will be involved throughout the process should additional intervention be recommended. Student Services staff intends to meet with high-risk students that day; however, if a follow up is not completed prior to dismissal, a staff member will contact parents to inform them of possible risk.

If you have any questions or concerns about this program, please do not hesitate to contact Ukindra Johnson, School Psychologist, at 703-813-3824 or uljohnson@fcps.edu If you wish for your child not to participate in the program,  please contact Ms. Brig Carrie at brcarrie@fcps.edu or return the opt out form to Poe Middle School Student Services.

Please note, if your child is currently in treatment, or has already been identified as having mental health concerns, parents are encouraged to discuss participation with the counselor, Ms. Brig Carrie at brcarrie@fcps.edu
