FCPS Parent Resource Center (PRC) provides resources, information, and
consultations to support the success of all students, including those with
learning challenges, special needs, and disabilities. Confidential meetings,
training opportunities, an extensive lending library, and a year-long calendar
of workshops are offered for parents, educators, and community members through
collaboration with staff members from FCPS offices as well as local and

Enjoy Your Strong-Willed Child: 10 Secrets to Stop the Power
Struggles
This workshop is presented
by Celebrate Calm's Kirk Martin. Participates will be given specific strategies
to understand your strong-willed child, motivate without power struggles, stop
yelling, lecturing and nagging, and enjoy your strong-willed child. Perfect for
parents of children ages 2-22! There are two workshop opportunities: Thursday,
October 4, 2018, from 7-8:30 p.m. and Friday, October 5, 2018, from 10 a.m.-noon.

Post-Secondary Education Options - Coffee and Conversation
Join us for this important
workshop hosted by FCPS Career and Transition Services (CTS) to learn important
information on post-secondary education options for students with disabilities.
Highlights will include disclosure, accessing accommodations, and disability
support services. This workshop will take place on Thursday, October 11, 2018,
from 10 a.m.-noon.
Moving on To Life in the Community: A Resource Fair for Students
with Disabilities
All Ages Welcome! Don’t miss
this FREE Resource Fair for students with disabilities and their parents! Learn
about vocational, residential, leisure, recreational, independent living, and
advocacy options. This Resource Fair is for all individuals requiring ongoing
employment and community support services after graduation. This workshop will
take place on Wednesday, October 17, 2018, from 6:30-8:45 p.m.

Considerations for Students with
Disabilities in the College Search & Beyond
Fairfax
County Public School’s College Night will be held on October 15, 2018, 7-9 p.m.
at Hayfield Secondary School. This annual event features an open-fair of
colleges and universities in addition to workshops related to the college
admissions process. Staff members from CTS and the Office of Disability
Services at George Mason University, will provide a workshop on
"Considerations for Students with Disabilities in the College Search and
Beyond" at this event. You and your student will learn about postsecondary
college campus options available for students with disabilities, how to choose
the right college, and legal rights and responsibilities. You can find more

Disability Mentoring Day
The
2018 Disability Mentoring Day for FCPS students will take place on October 18,
2018, at the Fairfax County Government Center from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. This
event is an annual collaborative effort between the county government and FCPS CTS. Fairfax
County Disability Mentoring Day promotes career development for high school
students with disabilities through career exploration and job shadowing
experiences with Fairfax County government employees in recognition of National
Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). Interested students should
contact the employment and transition representative (ETR) at their high school
for more information and an application (Deadline: October 5, 2018). Opportunities
for mentoring activities through the month of October are available in the
private sector as well.
- The
Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is asking all parents of children who
receive special education services to complete a survey regarding their child's
services. This month, schools will be sent paper copies of the survey to
distribute to parents of children receiving special education services. A
postage paid self-addressed envelope will be included to return the survey to
VDOE. Parents may also participate in the survey by completing it online,
however the survey may be taken only once. The survey closes on December 14,
2018.

Assessment Program (VAAP) Binder Review
VAAP
Collection of Evidence (COE) will be available for review by parents/guardians
during two windows: November
6-9, 2018, at the Test Distribution Center (TDC) in Springfield November
12-14, 2018 at Willow Oaks Center in Fairfax Appointments
must be made through the school’s Assessment Coach (AC) or School Test
Coordinator (STC).

- Early
childhood special education teachers are invited to Providing Resource Services in the Natural Environment. Strategies
and data collection resources will be shared that support providing resource
services in the natural environment (home, childcare, or community preschool).
Session 1: Visits in the home will occur on October 1, 2018, at Dunn Loring,
room 108. Participants can register to attend either the 9-10:30 a.m. or 2-3:30
p.m. session. Registration is available through MyPLT course #SS-22096.
- Early
childhood special education teachers are invited to attend session two of Behavior Management – Using Prevent Teach
Reinforce for Young Children
(PTR-YC). Interventions and data collection resources will be shared to
support preventing behaviors, teaching more appropriate behaviors, and the
reinforcement system needed to support behavior intervention plans. This
session will take place October 1, 2018, at Dunn Loring, room 111. Participants
can register to attend either the 9-10:30 a.m. or 2-3:30 p.m. session. Registration
is available through MyPLT course #SS-22097.
- Early
childhood special education teachers are invited to attend a three-part session
of Differentiation for Early Childhood
Special Education Students with Significant Disabilities. Strategies
to increase participation of preschool students with significant delays in daily
classroom activities. Ideas from Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and
Assistive Technology Services will be provided. The first session will be
held October 10, 2018, at Leis Center, room 109. Participants can register
to attend either the 9-10:30 a.m. or 2-3:30 p.m. session. Registration is
available through MyPLT course #SS-22099.

Virginia State Assessment Updates for
Students with Disabilities
The
Virginia Substitute Evaluation Program (VSEP) is no longer available as an
assessment option for students with disabilities. Students who previously
participated in VSEP will now be required to take the Standards of Learning
(SOL) tests, or if appropriate, participate in the Virginia Alternate
Assessment Program (VAAP) to meet federal accountability requirements.
The
Virginia Modified Achievement Standards Test (VMAST) assessment for
End-of-Course (EOC) Reading is available for eligible students with
disabilities pursuing a Standard Diploma with credit accommodations who meet
the VMAST eligibility requirements. The VMAST EOC Reading assessment will no
longer be available after the
2018-19 school year.
The
VMAST Algebra I assessment is no longer
available beginning in the 2018-19 school year.

Office of Extended School Year (ESY) and Assessment is offering a Year Long Overview of the Virginia
Alternate Assessment (VAAP): Getting Started on October 8, 2018. This
training is for both new and veteran teachers of students participating in the

A Yearlong Overview of the Virginia
Alternate Assessment (VAAP): Next Steps for Instruction will be offered on November 5,
2018, coming soon to MyPLT course # SS-44020.
- During the 2018-19 school year, Assistive
Technology Services (ATS) will be offering training sessions focused on the
use of high-end Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices. Participants
will learn basic programming and maintenance of the devices as well as
integration ideas. These sessions are open to both staff members and parents of
students using the specific devices. To register, contact the ATS Resource
Teacher who supports your school. October sessions will include the following
