Dear Panther Families,
We had a great week. Our teachers shared teaching strategies and also heard some new ideas at the Chantilly Collaboration Professional Development Day.
We finished the CogAT testing and Walk and Bike to School went really well.
We hope to see many of you at Field Day next week. Please remember that you must come to the front office and sign in on the Visitor Management System with your photo ID before heading to the Field Day activities. You must sign in and get a sticker as a volunteer or a visitor.
Have a fantastic fall weekend!
Ms. Andujar and Ms. Walker

Positivity Project
This week our focus has been on identifying and appreciating the good in others.
#OtherPeopleMatter
is the motto, hashtag, and the spirit of the Positivity Project
This week we focused on ways to identify and appreciate the GOOD in other people. Identifying
and appreciating the good in others isn’t always what comes naturally. Often,
it’s easier to blame others for our problems or find flaws in others to use as
excuses for our own jealousy, bitterness, or resentment.
To see
the good in others, we must first slow down and take the time to pay attention.
Look for the intentions behind people’s words and actions. If you feel
slighted, you can use perspective and ask, “Did that person intend to hurt me
or did he/she just come across in an awkward manner?”
So,
why is this important? Identifying and appreciating the good in other people
helps you see the world through a more positive – and less threatening – lens.
If you’re constantly seeing the negative traits of people, you’re going to
think the world is comprised of bad people – and you’re going to operate from a
defensive posture. This isn’t to say that we should be naïve or see the world,
and its people, through “rose-colored glasses.” It's just that we should strive
to understand people's intent. If you
see the good in another, they’re likely to see the good in you.
To quote
the Dalai Lama, “The roots of all goodness lie in the soil of appreciation for
goodness.”
Digital Citizenship Week
October 15-19 is FCPS Digital Citizenship Week
During this week, students will be focused on learning important
digital citizenship concepts and skills, so they become safe, ethical and
responsible citizens.
FCPS has materials to support families on the Digital
Citizenship Website and a FCPS
Created Video.
Please see the PTES website for details.
You can also follow the week’s activities on Twitter using
#FCPSDigCit.
Field Day is next Wednesday (10/17)

All volunteers and visitors must come to the main office and sign in and receive a Visitor's Badge to be on school property for Field Day. Please make sure you bring your government issued ID and give yourself enough time to sign in on the Visitor Management System.
Calling all Veterans and Active-Duty Military Personnel!
Poplar Tree Elementary would like to pay a special tribute to all veterans and active-duty military personnel at our Annual Veterans Day Assembly on Friday, November 9 @ 9:00 am. We would be honored to have you attend this special event.
Please RSVP by emailing Holly Walker, assistant principal, at hjwalker@fcps.edu or calling her at 703-633-7400, by November 1, 2018. Please share your name, military branch, military rank, child's name, a phone number and email.
If you are interested in presenting a short presentation or motivational speech (3-5 minutes) about your military career to the students, please share that in your email as well.
Each year, FCPS is eligible
to apply for federal Impact Aid grant funds and anticipates receiving about
$3,000,000 annually in funds. FCPS uses the Student-Parent Survey to
identify federally connected students and to support our request for Impact Aid
resources. The pre-filled Student-Parent Survey will come home on Tuesday, October 16.
Please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your
child's homeroom teacher by Friday, October 26.
If sections 2 through 4 of the
survey do not apply to you, just sign, date, and return the form by the due
date.
More information (including blank survey forms and translations) is available HERE.
Bus Delay Notification
The FCPS transportation department
and drivers do a fantastic job of getting thousands of students to their
schools safely and timely each day. There are however occasions where a bus may
run late due to unforeseen circumstances. Did you know that you can go to
the fcps.edu website
(home page) and check on bus delays? Should a bus be delayed by more
than 15 minutes, the transportation department will post the information
listing the school, bus number and the estimated delay time.
