From the Principal's Desk......
September 21, 2018
October brings many changes to our area: cooler weather, beautiful fall leaves, and a new face at Lanier! On October 1, I will officially begin my duties as the principal at Lanier. I am excited to begin to meet your wonderful children, our amazing staff, and of course, you! We will plan an Ice Cream Social in October for you to come by and meet me in mid-October. Know that I am passionate about the same things you are regarding your children. I want them to be safe, comfortable, and confident each day they walk through our halls. The lessons should be engaging and preparing them for critical lifelong skills. As a team, we can make this happen for each student, each day. October is just around the corner, and I excitedly anticipate what awaits at Lanier!
With regards,
Dr. Hanna

On September 19, 2018, Lanier Middle School, City of Fairfax School & Fairfax County Public School honored among 2018 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools. Lanier MS earned an Energy Star certification in 2015 and has saved more than $58,000 on energy costs from its energy conservation program. Lanier is currently phasing in Green Seal cleaning products and training and certifying staff members in green cleaning practices in an effort to further improve indoor air quality.
Advanced Academic Program (AAP) Information
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in Grades K-8. Learning experiences are designed to develop higher-level thinking through enrichment, acceleration, and extension of the Program of Studies (POS). A video showing advanced academics in action, as well as information about middle schools services, is available at: <<more info>>
- Full-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-8 (Level IV): Lanier Middle School is a designated Level IV center school. Level IV services are available for students found eligible through a central selection process. The program is available in Grades 3-8. Eligible students use curriculum from the AAP Curriculum Framework in the four academic subject areas on a full-time basis. Screening for Level IV services occurs during specific screening cycles:
-
Fall screening is only held for students who are new to FCPS and have been referred.
- Spring screening is held for any FCPS-enrolled student who has been referred.
Due to the volume of files screened centrally for Level IV services, deadlines are strictly held, and referrals will not be accepted past the published deadline.
- The referral form is available on the FCPS website
- A referral form may be turned in from the first day of school until the published deadline.
- The referral deadline is October 11, 2018 for students who are new to FCPS
- The referral deadline is January 10, 2019 for students who are not new to FCPS this school year but wish to apply for the 2019-2020 school year.
- Referral forms should be submitted to your child’s counselor by the posted deadline.
Additional information about the holistic screening process and information used for screening can be found at : <<screening>>
Please contact our Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, Ms. Bieryla, at labieryla@fcps.edu with any questions.
Learning Seminar we were so proud of how students participated in the “Lanier All Writes” activity which simulated a writing SOL. Consider asking your students about their essay prompt.
Counselors met with students who are new to Lanier and did not attend one of our feed elementary schools. They got to have a Q and A with Counselors and Peer Helpers. And a snack.
